As one of the largest, all-volunteer chapters outside of California, the Washington, D.C. alumni club brings together the estimated 10,000 Cal Bears that reside in the National Capital Region, which encompasses the D.C. metropolitan area of southern Maryland & northern Virginia.

With nearly 300 active members, the club organizes or participates in over 100 events a year, which seek to connect our alumni with opportunities related to networking (both social & career), lifelong learning, community service, professional development, athletics, & student outreach. The Annual Reception is the premier annual event of the Cal Alumni Club of Washington, D.C. This important event helps raise much-needed funding to support our expansive club operations and to support student scholarships at UC Berkeley. In addition we bring together newly admitted students to Cal from our area every summer for our annual picnic & welcome party.

Please join the Cal Alumni Club of Washington, DC, for its 14th Annual Reception, celebrating our 2024 Distinguished Alumnus Darryll J. Pines, BS '86 in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, who later earned his MS & PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Darryll John Pines serves as president of the University of Maryland, College Park, and is the Glenn L. Martin Professor of Aerospace Engineering. Formerly the Nariman Farvardin Professor of Engineering and dean of UMD’s A. James Clark School of Engineering, where he has been on the faculty since 1995, Pines amassed a record of academic leadership and research accomplishments that have dramatically elevated the school’s rankings and stature nationally and internationally. As dean, Pines instituted sweeping changes to improve the student experience, including revamping teaching in fundamental undergraduate courses and emphasizing sustainability engineering and service learning. In 2019, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering for his “inspirational leadership and contributions to engineering education.” Pines was also named a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and Institute of Physics in recognition of his contributions to the field. He chairs the Engineering Advisory Committee for NSF’s Engineering Directorate and sits on the Board of Trustees for Underwriters Laboratory nonprofit arm. Pines received a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MS and PhD in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
