Ghosts of War (Intercessory Prayer) - with Nathan Wells , 2016
16 mm Film: 2:58, Audio Recording, 6:21

Nathan Wells is filmed here in his grandfather’s WWII uniform, saying an intercessory prayer for the victims of war and letting out a war cry. The idea came from Wells’ story where he was first engaged in combat in Iraq and started to cry uncontrollably and let out a cry from his inner being that was something he had never heard before. The sound recording was subsequently manipulated by Wells’ to give an analog to the film’s otherworldly visual element, which was shot at 16 fps and played back at 24 fps. The prayer/ war cry will always be asynchronous to the image, just as our words and expressions will often be asynchronous to our inner lives.
