PROTECTING

CAÑO TIBURONES

Fighting for PUBLIC POLICIES that protect important bird areas, environmental health and benefit local communities

Caño Tiburones is Puerto Rico's largest wetland, comprising 7,000 acres between the municipalities of Arecibo and Barceloneta. It has been recognized as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and a Habitat of Greatest Conservation Need (HGCN). Despite the wetland's extension, only 3,805 acres have been designated as a Natural Protected Area by the Puerto Rican Government. SOPI has taken this claim to the Puerto Rican Government through a legal process, and continues its efforts to achieve full delineation and protected status for this invaluable natural resource.
