Originally I gave this 4 stars but have now revised to 4.5 stars as I am still thinking about the book 1 week after. The beginning of the story was difficult to get through. I genuinely was screwing up my face whilst reading thinking how can this story end in a good way for me. But the only way I did get through it in the end was due to the main female character being SO strong, analytical and controlled and rational (I hope that i the word I am trying to convey) probably why the author wrote her as studying psychology she was perfect for that career/role. Zoey was the stand out STAR in this story and carried Carter at the end. I took half a point off the rating because I felt the ending was a little bland compared the majority of the storyline but I still enjoyed it a lot and will reread in case I missed parts.

This story was ok. It started off a little dark and got my attention. Definitely started off with a bang. However I started to get a little bored towards the end. It's not as good as the morelli series which i loved. I really liked Carters character, in the beginning he actually reminded me of Mateo frm the morelli series but more of a younger version I guess. Also Zoey I really liked her and they way she thinks, very clever with how explains things, sees things frm a more logical perspective. I haven't read a female role like this 1 before so it made a good change frm the norm.

The first chapter is extremely confronting and disturbing and sets a tone for the book that is not actually followed in my opinion. This tone is one of extreme darkness within the romance and will be a trigger for many. After reading the first scene, I was in an uproar in my head about the charcaters behaviour and had to talk myself down because I had knowingly bought a dark bully romance.

The thing is after that scene there was a dynamic shift and I enjoyed the push and pull and the banter between the characters, often having a small on my face.

I wouldn't describe the entirely of the book as a dark romance or even a bully romance. It was almost light at times.

I loved the inner monologe of Zoey and found her to be an intelligent, determined and endearing character.

The end of the book left me wanting more. I wanted to know what happened two years later, three years later and so forth.

If you can get past the absolutely shockingness of the first scene, then you will enjoy the romance. Just be aware.

Not as dark as people think, the first chapter was good, didn’t think it was dark at all.

Not really into high school romances as they seem too juvenile but this book had a good plot.

Would’ve been better if it was a college or adult bully romance.

The synopsis online states that Carter wants Zoey, yet she is the one stalking him? Would’ve been better if it was Carter doing the stalking if he wants Zoey so badly..

A lot of the story was based on Carter’s pleasure (bl^w jobs) & hardly any on Zoeys. Also during the s*x scenes, there was so much conversation going on that it took away from the intimacy which was disappointing.

There was just a lot of paragraphs of information & not enough dialogue between Carter & Zoey.

This story would’ve been so much better if it wasn’t high school based.

So this book is a 5 star. The authors note in the beginning says it’s a bully romance and the H isn’t necessarily a good guy, but that’s it. This book has strong SA themes and non/dub con. Now, not in the exact sense as most people assume. These sex acts are done with omnipotent consent, which basically means she said yes once so it stands always. Now, before you get your girdle in a bunch, this is the way these particular characters play. And is minimally emotionally damaging to the FMC. Do not yuck someone else’s yum. The reviews pointing to this is exactly why I chose to read this book and I’m so happy I did. The characters are high school seniors, and we all know that’s a time for sexual exploration. These characters find out through an unfortunate incident that this is what gets their motor running, and Kudos to them for experiencing that so early. Sam Mariano was so prolific in the writing of this book. Each scene carefully crafted and witty banter abounded. The characters are borderline genius intelligence levels and I’m so happy they were giving the emotional and intellectual maturity for the heavy content. This book has D/s content, in my opinion it’s light, but that makes sense as they are exploring their relationship and sexuality. I also love that this was only the POV of the FMC. Sometimes writers try to give everyone’s POV and it causes a disconnect in the characters, again just my opinion. I would however live a short story for the MMC POV, because once he found his perfect match in the FMC he was DONE! And I love that he had to show this through his actions not portray it through his own commentary. I generally prefer RH novels, because I need the extra stimulation of multiple partners, and recreational activities. (Wink wink) but this character BROUGHT all the fire, lust, desire, and even the soft squishy parts. I LOVE that he was able to show vulnerability to the FMC in a way that didn’t demasculinate (is that a word?) him. He was still tough as nails, witty as ever and totally smitten with our FMC. If you have NO triggers and like things a lot spicy you have to read this book. Oh and the MMC was an SOB, but he protected and guarded those he lived with every thing he had. Sometimes his means to an end were very much tipping into the black but most of the time he was steadfastly grey. Happy Reading! Now ima try to find another book to match this one because whew! This was a beautiful ride!

This book was a roller coaster ride! It’s very dark and heavy–you should definitely stop to read the author’s warning at the beginning. Even though I was warned, I still hated Carter in the beginning. But, some of my favourite books make me genuinely despise the love interest before building them up and making me love them. While I never quite *loved* Carter, I grew to love him as a character and I could not put down this book! It’s dark and gritty and I loved the psychology and manipulation between the two main characters.
I can’t wait to check out some of Mariano’s other books - particularly The Boy on the Bridge.

Wow !! This book was fantastic 👏 It's YA in High School , but the MC & FC were more mature than teens & most of the time it seemed as if they were a few years older .After reading the first few pages , I was feeling a bit apprehensive about continuing, but I plowed through and so glad I did as the story was brilliantly written. Carter & Zoey's characters were well fleshed out , had good background stories & the main story was very gritty & powerful
Make sure to read TW's as I love dark romance bully stories but even I felt squeamish at what was happening in the first pages ! I loved Zoey's character she was extremely likeable & level-headed . I didn't take to Carter at first he was manipulative, cruel & lacking empathy but as you got to know him through the book you realised something bad had happened to him & it was a shocker !!! Well done Sam Mariano a thoroughly great read & I definitely recommend you read this book now I'm onto the next one 👍 😀
