Universal Literacy is one of the eight initiatives under the Mayor's Equity and Excellence for All agenda. The goal of the initiative is to have at least two-thirds of students reading on grade level by the end of second grade by 2022, with the target of 100 percent of all second graders reading at grade level by 2026. I work closely with the kindergarten through second grade teachers to improve their practice as we work to ensure students are reading on grade level by the end of second grade.
