Partnership Supports Student Achievement and Leadership

A new agreement with the University of Maryland, Baltimore County provides a mentoring program at Bellows Spring Elementary School, opportunities for students to attend UMBC athletic contests, college readiness and career exploration for middle and high school students, and more.

Students Engage with Bestselling Author

Students from several HCPSS schools met and engaged with bestselling young adult author Nic Stone during an event at the Howard County Library System’s East Columbia Branch. Stone has written several award-winning novels, including “Dear Martin,” which is included in the HCPSS 10th grade English curriculum.

HCPSS Congratulates 119 National Board Certified Teachers

This December, 119 HCPSS teachers achieved their National Board Certification. Ninety-five were first-time achievers and 24 renewed their certification. HCPSS now has 299 National Board Certified Teachers, which is the highest-level credential in the educational profession.

Students Develop Creative Solutions to Local Problems as Part of National STEM Contest

Students at Lime Kiln Middle School and Mt. Hebron High School made it to the state finals in this year’s Samsung “Solve for Tomorrow” contest. LKMS developed a plan to create a sensor to monitor waste collected at the end of a drain pipe, while MHHS’s plan featured the creation of a device that would enable drivers to wirelessly share their license and registration information with police officers.

Program Builds Confidence and Friendships in ES Female Students

Created by WKD Karate 4 Girls owner and HCPSS partner Monique Washington-Jones, “Girl Power” is a mentoring program for elementary-age female students. The program teaches life skills like self-confidence, gratitude, relationship-building, leadership and more.

Wilde Lake HS Senior Elevates Student Voice as Student Member of the State Board of Education

As the student member of the State Board of Education, Abisola Ayoola works with her fellow State Board members to develop education policy and standards for prekindergarten through high school. She also has the unique responsibility of engaging and representing the student voice.
