TRIPOLI, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- A training center for women opened here Wednesday as part of a support program funded by the European Union (EU) and Germany.

The center, with a venue for sports, recreational activities and intercommunity exchanges, provides vocational training and skills development projects for women, the European Delegation to Libya said in a statement.

"Women are being supported to set up a self-managed supervisory model at the center," read the statement.

The new center is a part of the Support to Municipalities program, which is funded by the EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, according to the statement.

During the inauguration of the center, EU Ambassador to Libya Alan Bugeja and German Ambassador Oliver Owcza stressed the important role that Libyan women play in building a stable and prosperous Libya.

According to the two officials, this is the first of ten centers which will open this year.
