Books For Better Lives Book Drive

For those who don't know me, I’m a Speech-Language Pathologist who worked with kids with speech and language disorders for five years. I love helping children find their voice and am very passionate about encouraging language and literacy development for all children. Since having my son Charlie, I stay home with him, and now baby Parker, and work from home as an independent consultant with Usborne Books & More. We sell incredibly engaging and educational children’s books that are designed to help children develop a love for books!
I’m partnering up with a local non-profit in Houston called Books For Better Lives this month to collect new and like-new children’s books for at-risk elementary-aged kids in Houston who are living in poverty. These students typically have very few books at home, which puts them at a disadvantage compared to their peers who have lots of books of their own. In light of COVID-19 and all the effects it has had, like closing schools and libraries, this is an incredibly important time to make sure kids have access to books, especially those who are the most at risk for falling behind. Book ownership is linked to reading proficiency and educational success. Books For Better Lives is a new collaboration between the Houston Food Bank, Books Between Kids, the Houston Public Library System, and Houston Community ToolBank to distribute books to deserving students when they are not in school. The distributions will be in partnership with the Houston Food Bank’s meal programs for these same students.
I think this organization is amazing and has the potential to make a really big impact in the Houston area this summer by providing thousands of books to children who lack access to books right now. I would especially love to put Usborne and Kane Miller books in the hands of these kids- they are more durable, engaging, multi-sensory, and educational than any other books on the market. I believe they could encourage many reluctant readers to love reading!
I will be raising funds through donations over the next few weeks to purchase hundreds of brand new Usborne and Kane Miller books to donate. Usborne Books & More has an incredible policy for book drives, where for any book drive that raises over $250, Usborne will donate 50% of those sales in additional free books! So if I’m able to raise $2,000, Usborne Books & More will donate $1,000 more in free books! This will allow us to make a HUGE difference!! These books will be distributed to children this summer through the Houston Food Bank’s meal program.
If you would like to donate money towards purchasing brand new Usborne and Kane Miller Books, you can do so right here! Even $5 can make a difference and will pay for a book for a child in need! A $25 donation will purchase a new chapter book for up to 7 children, and a $100 donation will sponsor as many as 30! Please consider donating today to greatly impact the lives of children in our city! Donations will be accepted until May 15th.
