Education in Egypt

The public education system in Egypt is well developed as a hub of education not only for the country, but for the Arab world. Egypt has the largest overall education system in the Middle East and North Africa with Cairo the center for many government offices governing the educational system. The city has the largest number of schools and institutions of higher education in Egypt. It has grown rapidly since the early 1990s and in recent years, the Government of Egypt has accorded even greater priority in improving the education system. With the help of World Bank and other multilateral organizations, Egypt aims to increase access in early childhood care.

The public educational system is compulsory for children from 4–14 years old. It is broken up into:

  • Kindergarten 4-6 years old
  • Primary school 6-12 years old
  • Preparatory school 12-14 years old
  • Secondary school 15 to 17 years old

There are 3 basic school types.
Arabic Schools - A type of government school that provide the national curriculum in the Arabic Language. A governmental English language curriculum is taught starting at first Primary year and French is added as a second foreign language in Secondary Education.
Experimental Language Schools - A type of government school that teaches most of the government curriculum (Science, Mathematics and Computer) in English, and adds French as a second foreign language in Preparatory Education. An Advanced English language curriculum is provided in all Educational stages. Social Studies are taught in Arabic. Students are admitted into first grade at age seven; a year older than Arabic schools.
Al-Azhar Schools - Consists of six years of primary stage, a three year preparatory stage and three years of secondary stage. This system is supervised by the Supreme Council of the Al-Azhar Institution, but remains under the Ministry of Education's watch. The curriculum is primarily concerned with religious subjects and all the students are Muslims, and males and females are separated in all stages. The graduates of this system are then automatically accepted into Al-Azhar University.

International Schools

International schools can be the perfect solution for an expat student (multinational corporation executives, children of diplomats, NGO staff) in Egypt. There may be some local population, but the schools are usually geared for an international student body. Schools may follow a curriculum model from the US, UK, or France. Primary instruction may be any language (and multiple languages are usually taught), but it is usually in English, French, or German. Schools provide similar standards of schooling around the globe, providing for an easy transition between schools whether they are in France or Vietnam. Schools also provide internationally accepted accreditation such as the international baccalaureate.

Admission and enrollment procedures vary from school to school. Space is often limited and preference may be given to students based on nationality. Tuition tends to be expensive based on local standards, but offers high standards of learning, boast smaller class sizes, first-rate facilities, and extracurricular. Boarding facilities are available at some schools, but most only provide day classes.
