Why this petition matters

Started by Combined Advocacy Groups Queensland

People with disabilities are regularly denied the same opportunities as other citizens as their rights are commonly ignored or denied. They often experience discrimination, abuse, neglect or exploitation. Advocacy safeguards the human rights of people with disabilities and ensures their voices are heard.

From the 1st July 2019 the Queensland Government will stop funding independent advocacy for people with disabilities. Nine advocacy organisations across Queensland, which collectively receive less that $2 million will have their funding discontinued.

We are calling on the Queensland Government to continue to show a commitment to Queenslanders with disabilities by maintaining, at a minimum, the current level of funding for independent advocacy organisations beyond June 2019. Independent advocacy makes positive and sustainable difference to the lives of people with disabilities removing pressure on government agencies and services. It strengthens the capacity of people to fully participate in family and community and has improved the lives of thousands of people with disability and the wider community.

"Every dollar used by Australia’s independent disability advocacy agencies delivers $3.50 in benefits. Withdrawing funding will mean the loss of this huge cost benefit."
(A Cost Benefit Analysis of Australian independent disability advocacy agencies- Professor Anne Daly,Greg Barrett, Rhiân Williams)

Independent advocacy is not part of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). All levels of government have a responsibility to support this essential service for people with disabilities to ensure they can exercise their rights and freedoms.  The state government is responsible for vital services such as health, housing, education, justice and transport for all of their citizens. Too often people with disabilities experience or are vulnerable to barriers and discrimination when trying to access these services and require support.

Join us in calling on the Premier of Queensland, Annastacia Palaszczuk to commit to ongoing funding for independent advocacy services in Queensland beyond June 2019.

#AdvocacyMatters to all Queenslanders Premier Palaszczuk
