((erin)) welcome back - ahead of the fall semester - the university of wisconsin - green bay is opening its campus for faculty and staff. (tom)) and a popular community event is starting again at lambeau field - and it's more than just taking laps -but staying in shape. ((erin)) but first some stories local five worked on for you today. I'm kris schuller local 5 news in green bay. Where today city firefighters demonstrated just how dangerous fireworks can be. And because of that they are urging everyone to use fireworks properly and always take precautions - better yet leave fireworks to the professionals, meaning if possible take in a fireworks show. I'm paul evansen for local five news here in the fox cities where area physicians are reminding those planning on gathering for the july 4th holiday to do so with social distancing guidelines in mind. If you do choose to take part in larger gatherings they say avoid unnecessary handshakes, wash you hands often with soap and water for at least twenty seconds, clean and disinfect common surfaces and avoid people who are sick. With the risk of transmission higher in indoor settings they recommend keeping your parties outdoors if possible. I'm erinn taylor with local 5 news in green bay. Usually when it gets hot out in the summer - cooling centers start to pop up across the area. This year the coronavirus pandemic has complicated those efforts at the new community shelter - the facility has managed to remain coronavirus free. However - they've had to cut down on beds - and they will not be opening their cafeteria as a public cooling station. Normally, they say locals without air conditioning in their homes would stop by to cool off on a hot summer day. This year, that's not an option. As of wednesday afternoon - there are still beds open here at the new community shelter - but officials do expect those to fill up quickly. ((erin)) the university of wisconsin green bay is opening its campus today as part of a phased plan. Faculty and staff for all four campuses - green bay, marinette, manitowoc and sheboygan will be able to return to their offices and work spaces. In this first phase - those on campus must wear masks and do a daily symptom assessments. University chancellor michael alexander says that summer and fall enrollment look to be up - and they continue to give tours around campus for future students. "they can sign up for a tour, and we have those tours, that are one safely, and be able to take small groups of people around campus and show them what a beautiful space we have ." ((erin)) the shorewood golf course, cofrin arbroetum, communiversity park and the disk golf course will be open today as well. ((tom)) in other green bay news - ((tom)) today is the new green bay area school district superintendent stephen murley's first day on the job. Back in march the school district offered him the job. Murley served as a superintendent at the iowa city community school district for ten years, as well as a superintendent for the wausau school district. The school district says that they chose murley because of his experience and leadership. ((erin)) in coronavirus news - ((erin)) another spike in cases - with 540 new cases in wisconsin. The number of positive cases is up to just over 29 thousand - bringing the percentage of positive cases to four point three percent -a downward trend from yesterday of the cases - 79 percent have recovered. At this time there are 76 labs testing. ((tom)) wisconsin democratic senator tammy baldwin is taking up several pieces of legislation related to the coronavirus pandemic. She is leading an amendemnt to the national defense authorization act that would require the presidnet to scale up nationwide testing and personal protective equipment. She also spoke on the senate floor tonight for the passage of every worker protection act that would protect workers from covid-19. "it's long overdue that there be enforceable standards rather than simply voluntary guidance from cdc. So that was very important to me that we get that job done and call on the administration to do its job." ((tom)) she also introduced the jobs for economic recovery act that will help create job opportunitites for the unemployed. ((erin)) in other local news -
