Welcome to SPE Aberdeen’s March e-Newsletter
Dear SPE Aberdeen members, colleagues and friends,
Regular attendees at our Monthly Meetings will know that we recently moved the venue – from the Douglas Hotel to the Jurys Inn. Despite our best efforts, this move has not gone well – Jurys essentially oversold their capabilities, and the last two monthly meetings have not been to our customary high standards, with poor acoustics and inadequate catering.
The March meeting will be held at the new Sandman Signature Hotel on St Andrews Street, with parking available in the Bon Accord Centre and the Denburn car park (which is free after 5pm).
For those of you who experienced the Jurys Inn, please accept our apologies – we are working hard to ensure that the Sandman deliver to our expected high standards. We look forward to seeing you at our new venue.
We are very fortunate to have an exceptionally enthusiastic and engaged Young Professional (YP) committee who consistently come up with an exciting calendar of events aimed at developing technical and interpersonal skills. The SPE term “YP” refers to professionals under the age of 35; however, their events and activities are open to everyone.
Their Simplified Series continues go from strength to strength and remains their flagship programme. Each month an industry expert demystifies a technical topic to create appeal to a wider audience. This year’s session started with a presentation on big data by Steve Rossiter of AgileTek and still to come this session is a presentation on the energy transition in the oil and gas industry by Sam Gomersall of Pale Blue Dot Energy.
They also run a series of events aimed at highlighting and educating on the importance of non-technical skills Unplugged 360, whichaddresses a diverse range of topics,. The presentations are followed by lively round table discussions - this was certainly the case at last years event on the gig economy and what it means for the oil and gas sector. Later this month equality and diversity in engineering is under the spotlight.
In 2018 the committee introduced a new series of events, known as “TechTours”. These events provide unique opportunities to visit and see behind the scenes of various local companies providing a practical insight into various sectors in the industry. Last month Weatherford opened their doors to the YP’s, providing a fascinating tour of their rig. If your company would like to host a tour, please contact yp.chair@spe-uk.org
The next Emerging Engineers Forum will take place during Offshore Europe. This event provides the YPs with a platform to engage with senior members of the oil and gas industry and the theme for this year’s event is leadership & entrepreneurship
In addition to these events, they also make time to have some social events throughout the year including taking part in the annual joint society YP event. The YP’s also support the Schools and Careers Guidance committee to inspire next generation by visiting schools careers fairs to promote our industry to young people.
Keep an eye on the section’s website for details of all upcoming events. Our thanks goes to Expro for their continued support of the YP programme. The committee is seeking additional sponsorship to enable them to deliver more events of value to our Young Professionals – if you can help please or would like to become involved with the committee contact yp.chair@spe-uk.org. We look forward to seeing you at the events.
Kind regards – Ian Phillips
SPE Aberdeen Chairman

Alternatives to Welding – Book Your Place Now!
Geraint Rhys Davies, TAQA and chair of Alternatives to Welding conference explains “I’m particularly looking forward to hearing the case study by Chrysaor on how they utilised a gel plug to secure a critical pipeline isolation. I’m also keen to hear of the work by PhD student Ikechukwu Onyegiri, University of Aberdeen, who has studied the behaviour of cracks in the steel substrate beneath composite repairs. Whilst composite repairs are relatively commonplace for corrosion defects there is considerable uncertainty over how effective crack repairs may be, and this is precisely the type of work that the conference hopes to bring together to help inform future decisions.”

Transforming Controls Safety and Security – How Safe is your Asset?
Digital transformation, functional safety and Cyber Security are often discussed in isolation in the process control industry. However, data, analytics and remote access, are now used to improve safety, reduce cost and increase efficiency of assets. This merges these areas and they should collectively be discussed as segments of the digital solution. This new event organised by SPE Aberdeen and InstMC will address all of these issues and we are now inviting abstracts for 20 minute presentations. Ade Isaac, Spirit Energy, explains why you should get involved! More information on the abstracts process, sponsorship and exhibition opportunities here.
