About the Author

Avis Brown-Riley is an Operations Manager for a Fortune 500 company, has played Golf for 44 years, and is a Breast Cancer survivor.

Avis enjoys Sunday afternoon golf outings with her family, volunteering for the San Diego Inner City Junior Golf Foundation, watching her “Star” athlete son play baseball and football, and Facebook messaging with youths around the world, who seek her advice about Golf, health awareness and her life experiences that helped her battle breast cancer and becoming a Champion in Life.

vis is also a mom, who has one daughter, Ayanna, and one son, Amari. She has been married to her husband, James, for twenty-one years. Avis comes from the famous Gordon and Harriet Brown golfing family. She has three brothers and one sister, whose youngest son is PGA certified.

Avis was introduced to the game of golf at age seven. By the age of ten, she became the first African American to win the prestigious Junior World Golf Championship. As a member of the San Diego Junior Golf Association, she won over forty-six golf tournaments and represented San Diego in team events. During her final year of junior golf, she amazingly won ten of sixteen events, finished second twice, and third three times. She won the San Diego Junior Golf Association Junior Golfer of the Year five times.

In 1982, Avis became the first and only African American to win the San Diego City Women’s Amateur Championship. Avis attended the United States International University, a Division I college on a golf scholarship. She won the first National Minority Collegiate Golf tournament. In 1984, she was ranked twenty-fifth in the nation, and played in the NCAA Women’s Championship every year. She received her degree in communications.

After college, Avis traveled the United States, much of the time alone, playing in mini tour golf events. Her professional golf career is highlighted in 1988, when she shot a seven under par 65 (a women course record) to win the Michelob Classic at Canyon Crest Country Club. She also played in the United States Women’s Open at the Funny Farm Country Club in Baltimore, Maryland.

Avis was inducted into the San Diego Golf Hall of Fame and the African American Golfers Hall of Fame.

Avis credits her strong faith in God, her parents’ values of desire, dedication, and determination to become a winner in life, along with her life experiences, as the key factors toward beating her battle with breast cancer. Avis strongly believes that it is not the adversity that you face but how you face the adversity that defines you as a person and builds character.

As her amazing journey continues, Avis looks forward to traveling the world, hosting the Avis Brown-Riley Golf Extravaganza, designed to empower youth and women to reach their goals and becoming a winner in life. No matter where she is at, work, church, golfing events, or speaking engagements, you will always hear Avis say with a sparkle in her eyes, “What a great feeling, being able to give back to the children in the community.”

Avis will donate some of the book proceeds to the following Non-Profit Organizations: San Diego Inner City Junior Golf Foundation. The Avis Brown-Riley Golf Extravaganza team has affectionately nicknamed her the Little Warrior.

In July 2017, Avis officially became LPGA Certified. Stay tuned to the next chapter in this amazing journey.
