Full Moon Names
In Native American and early Colonial times, the Full Moon for January was called the Full Wolf Moon. It appeared when wolves howled in hunger outside the villages.
Traditionally, the January Moon is also known as the Old Moon. To some Native American tribes, this was the Snow Moon, but most applied that name to the next Full Moon, in February.

January Blue Moon
When two full Moons occur within one calendar month, the second is called a Blue Moon. In January 2018, a Blue Moon will occur on the 31st. Learn more about Blue Moons !

FRESH & LOCAL:
Souping - the new juicing! Keep all that vegetal fiber with vegetable-based soups as opposed to fruit-filled juices. Winter produce lends itself impeccably to soups: go creamy with pureed root vegetables like beets, carrots or turnips, incorporate dark leafy greens like kale, collards or spinach in a broth with beans, or make your own bone broth and eat it plain or use it as a base. Veg, greens, and bones are all available at the Crescent City Farmers Market as well as all kinds of fresh and dried herbs and seasonings, fresh or freeze dried ginger and turmeric, tofu, and all kinds of options for endless riffing. Keep warm, eat soup!
PICKS OF THE WEEK
ALIEN BROCCOLI
On par with kohlrabi in the alien looks category, romanesco, also known as Roman cauliflower or broccoflower, is a strikingly beautiful vegetable which grows in a natural fractal pattern. Crunchier in texture than cauliflower or broccoli, romanesco has an earthy, nutty flavor in comparison. With a firmness more similar to cauliflower, it holds up to many of the same treatments, including roasting, our favorite preparation for just about anything. The crazily geometric curds - the term used for the sections of a cauliflower, broccoli or romanesco - retain their shape and color throughout cooking, so they'll look as great on your plate as they do in display at the market.
VENDOR OF THE WEEK:
CAJUN GROWERS
Welcome back to the market, Cajun Growers! We've been getting all kinds of inquiries since November when this hydroponic tomato grower normally begins their season as to their whereabouts. Well, the tomatoes are (finally!) ripe and the wait is over. Vendors at CCFM for the last eight years, Tad and Lily Ledet join us at the Tuesday and Saturday markets from Cutoff, LA with beautiful fragrant tomatoes, several varieties of heirloom tomatoes, mixed cherry tomatoes, hydroponically grown peppers (sweet and hot), basil and cucumbers throughout the winter, during what would normally be off season for these crops. Come pick up some picture perfect produce, courtesy of the Ledet's hydroponic prowess and enjoy tomatoes all year long!
TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:
CASA BORREGA
Ay, Dios Mío! Casa Borrega is back at it again! Our friends as Casa Borrega will be serving your favorite traditional Mexican foods throughout the month of January. Enjoy them at the Green Plate Special tent at Tuesday market from 9am to 1pm.
RECIPE OF THE WEEK:
ITALIAN VEGETABLE STEW
Got a hunk of day-old crusty bread you're not sure what to do with? Or a half a cabbage in the fridge? The true beauty of this soup is that it is infinitely substitutable. Try green onions instead of leeks, rutabaga instead of carrots, some frozen field peas you may still have from summer instead of the white kidneys, or add radish, greens and all for a kick.

Ingredients
  • ½ 1-lb. loaf sourdough bread, torn into 2" pieces (about 6 cups)
  • 1 bunch collard greens, center ribs and stems removed
  • 1 bunch Tuscan or other kale, center ribs and stems removed
  • Kosher salt
  • ½ cup olive oil, divided, plus more for serving
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled, finely chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, finely chopped
  • 1 leek, white and pale-green parts only, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic cloves, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 28-oz. can whole peeled tomatoes, drained
  • 8 cups low-sodium vegetable broth
  • 3 15-oz. cans cannellini (white kidney) beans, rinsed
  • 4 sprigs thyme
  • 1 sprig marjoram or oregano
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Shaved Parmesan (for serving)
Directions
Scatter bread on a rimmed baking sheet in a single layer. Let stand at room temperature to slightly dry out, about 2 hours.
Working in batches, cook collards and kale separately in a large pot of boiling salted water until slightly softened, about 3 minutes per batch. Rinse to cool. Squeeze out excess water; roughly chop. Set aside.
Heat ¼ cup oil in a large heavy pot over medium heat. Add carrots, celery, and leek; stir often until softened, 8-10 minutes.
Add garlic and red pepper flakes. Cook, stirring until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add tomatoes, crushing with your hands as you add them. Cook, stirring frequently until liquid is evaporated and tomatoes begin to stick to the bottom of the pot, 10-15 minutes.
Add broth, beans, thyme, marjoram, bay leaf, and reserved greens; season with salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer until flavors meld and soup thickens slightly, 40-50 minutes. Discard sprigs and bay leaf.
DO AHEAD: Soup can be made 2 days ahead. Let cool slightly; chill until cold. Cover and keep chilled. Reheat before continuing. Store bread airtight at room temperature.
Just before serving, gently stir bread and ¼ cup oil into soup. Divide among bowls, top with Parmesan, and drizzle with oil.

Back at it Wednesday for regular hours and our Showing Some Love to Malbec Flight!  Most people are familiar with Malbec from Mendoza Argentina, famous for its rich, red wines, where the grapes flourish in the sun-drenched, high altitude vineyards. Originally a French varietal that's now found primarily in Cahors and a major grape in south-west blends, Malbec also thrives in other regions and we'll be pouring a few of our favorites.  You'll try 4 wines from Patagonia, Mendoza and France to show how the terroir of each place effects what is in your glass. No standing in line for our Wednesday flights -  you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking.  Resident cheesemonger Casey Foote will be offering a specially selected cheese plate to pair with the wines ($10 with flight, $15 without the flight)   The flight of bubbly is $15, 4 wines - reservations are not required but if you want to be sure to have a seat you can do so here: Showing Some Love for Malbec
Friday, Shannon Skarda will be in the shop with a great lineup of Sicilian wines. This tasting is free and open to the public, no reservations required.

Our Saturday Happy Hour (4-6pm) is a fun way to spend the afternoon with all of our wines by the glass half off.  Another great flight next week, Kristen Wright of Palm Bay and Ian Ribowsky of Jean Luc Colombo will be pouring a great range of Northern Rhone wines (see below).

WYES LAUNCHES TRICENTENNIAL "TOURISM TIE-INS"
Presented by the Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation

New Orleans, LA - WYES-TV, New Orleans' premier public television station, is pleased to announce the launch of its Tricentennial "Tourism Tie-Ins," a city-wide program presented by the Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. in front of St. Louis Cathedral, 615 Pere Antoine Alley, New Orleans. In case of inclement weather the event will be inside of the Cathedral.

"Tom and I are proud to make this gift to WYES and ultimately to the people of New Orleans and the many visitors who enjoy the unique culture and history of our city. For 60 years, WYES has been our region's leader in promoting this history and culture, and we are delighted to support this project and the positive addition it makes to our community," stated Gayle Benson.

WYES brings history to life with the help of QR Codes (Quick Response Codes) on 45 black and gold markers found at iconic sites throughout Uptown, Mid City, Downtown, and the French Quarter. The markers enable locals and visitors to access WYES "Tricentennial Moments" that correspond with the sites.  The "Tricentennial Moments" are one to two-minute features, currently airing on WYES-TV, that document New Orleans' history, its unique people, architecture, food, music and art. Confirmed speakers include: Allan Pizzato, WYES President and CEO; Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond; Gayle Benson; and Peggy Scott Laborde, WYES Producer.

"WYES is delighted to offer this innovative initiative in celebration of our city's monumental 300th anniversary," said Allan Pizzato, WYES President and CEO. "These 'Tourism Tie-Ins" will educate and engage thousands of local citizens and visitors in the rich culture and history of this great city. We are extremely grateful to the Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation for making this project possible and for all that they do to support WYES and so many worthy organizations in our city."

The "Tourism Tie-In" project is a major component in the slate of WYES Tricentennial initiatives that began in 2014 and that includes documentaries, middle school Electronic Field Trips, a book and more. The entire slate is made possible by WYES Cornerstone sponsors The Historic New Orleans Collection and The Meraux Foundation.

WYES is proud to be New Orleans' storyteller. Details available at

GAL HOLIDAY & THE HONKY TONK REVUEAT OGDEN AFTER HOURS
/// January 4 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Gal Holiday and the Honky Tonk Revue were at the vanguard of New Orleans' now-thriving country scene when they formed over a decade ago, and they've remained in a league of their own ever since. Combining evocative songwriting, impeccable musicianship, and a twinge of punk sensibility to boot, their infectious Western swing energy has earned them their place in the upper echelon of local favorites and helped grow an avid fan-base of two-steppers around the world.
"The Gal" is Vanessa Niemann, an Appalachian-born songstress who has lent her powerful voice and magnetic stage presence to various musical projects in New Orleans and around the country. In 2017, she was nominated for an Ameripolitan Award in the category of Honky Tonk Female. Over the years, the Revue has counted among its ranks some of the finest musicians in the region. The current roster boasts guitarists Matt Slusher and Justin LeCuyer in addition to drummer Rose Cangelosi, and upright bassist Corey McGillivary, all excellent singers in their own right adding tight harmonies to the sound.
These multi-time Big Easy and Best of the Beat Award recipients have shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and countless other talents. 2017 will be their tenth year appearing at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. "When it comes to honky tonk," OffBeat Magazine said of their third and most recent album, Last to Leave, "the real deal's right here." Their tunes have reached as high as third on the FAR Charts (Freeform American Roots Music) and the top 100 on the AMA Charts (Americana Airplay, Americana Music Association.)

The Societe de Champs Elysee, St. Claude Ave. -
Loyola Ave. streetcar route, 7:30 p.m.
The Society of Elysian Fields popped up last year as a downtown answer to the Phunny Phorty Phellows streetcar ride. The party begins in Buffa's Back Room, 1001 Esplanade Ave, at 5 p.m. with a performance by The Davis Rogan Band featuring R&B master Al "Carnival Time" Johnson. The cadre of costumed upstarts will then proceed to the Saint Claude Avenue streetcar, which they will ride to the end of the line on Loyola Avenue and back. Like the PPP, the ride is a public spectacle but a private party.
However, everyone is welcome to the masked ball afterwards at the Siberia Lounge, 2227 St. Claude Ave. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Visit the Society's Facebook page for details.

Phunny Phorty Phellows, 7 p.m., St. Charles Avenue streetcar route
Before the Joan of Arc parade clip-clopped into the Vieux Carre a decade ago, the Phunny Phorty Phellows rolling party was the most conspicuous kickoff of Mardi Gras. Starting in 1981, a gang of costumed rowdies has annually piled aboard a chartered St. Charles streetcar for a noisy, well-lubricated ride from the Willow Street streetcar barn to Canal Street and back. The PPP ride is for members-only, but a rabble of pubic partiers generally forms at the start to wish the ice-breakers a bon voyage.

 6

Carnival Kickoff Celebration, Metairie, 2 p.m.
The free afternoon party marking the start of the throw me somethin' season in Jefferson Parish will include performances by Big Sam's Funky Nation and the Grace King High School Marching Band, plus appearances by the New Orleans Baby Cakes' mascots and 2018 Mardi Gras royalty. The outdoor celebration takes place on the neutral ground of Veterans Boulevard at the corner of Severn Avenue.

Celebrating what would have been Joan of Arc's 606th birthday, the Joan of Arc parade marks its 10th year on Twelfth Night - Saturday, Jan. 6.
In honor of the beginning of New Orleans' tricentennial celebrations, this year's parade will be special in many ways, the most notable of which will be the attendance of a special delegation of government officials and staff from Orleans, France. The group will be in town to celebrate the signing of an official sister city agreement with New Orleans on Jan. 4.

This year's parade will be the first to include 10 Joans of Arc, portraying the famed warrior from age 13 as a shepherdess to her death as an angel. It also will be the first time all members of its royalty will be on horseback, including this year's Maid of (New) Orleans, Martha Pinney, a sophomore at Louise McGehee School, who is the only child to have walked in every parade since its inception.
The French Quarter walking parade starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at Toulouse and Decatur streets and features more than 400 participants who celebrate the life of "The Maid of New Orleans" through costumed characters, props, large puppets, music and a wide array of unique and handmade throws, including limited hand-sewn Joan of Arc dolls and decorated wooden swords.

Joan of Arc Parade
When: 6 p.m. Saturday
Where: Starts at the corner of Toulouse and Decatur streets, winds around the French Quarter and ends at approximately 8:30 p.m. at Washington Artillery Park

Joan of Arc parade, 6 p.m., French Quarter
January 6 is Joan of Arc's birthday! Therefore it is time for the 10th annual Joan of Arc parade in the French Quarter. Expect a 400-person procession featuring warrior women in armor on horseback, marching monks, angels, trumpeters, bagpipers, and other medieval martyrdom merrymakers. All with a French inflection, of course.
The foot (and hoof) parade starts on Decatur Street at Toulouse Street. It heads uptown, then makes a right at Conti Street, then another right at Chartres Street, then right on Ursulines Street, and right yet again on Decatur Street, ending at Jackson Square. Don't miss the sword blessing ceremony at St. Louis cathedral midway through the parade.

This year the Joan's Parade begins at 6 p.m., earlier than in past years, because of the city's King's Day fireworks display on the riverfront at 9 p.m. (see below).
King's Day Celebration fireworks, 9 p.m., French Quarter riverfront
As you may have heard, New Orleans is celebrating its 300th birthday in 2018. To get the party started with a bang, Mardi Gras-themed fireworks (purple, green, and gold, we presume), will pop over the river starting at 9 p.m. on Jan. 6.

PIZZA NOLA'S "CARNIVAL KICKOFF" CELEBRATES RETURN OF DONG PHUONG KING CAKES
Pre-Order King Cake by 12/31 and save 10%!

Contact: Will Samuels  (504) 872-0731
NEW ORLEANS, LA- December 11, 2017- Will Samuels, co-owner of Lakeview's Pizza Nola, announced today the pizzeria once again will launch New Orleans' Tricentennial Carnival season with a party in the parking lot on Saturday, January 6, 2018, from 8:00-10:00am, at 141 W Harrison.
"This is the third year that we have celebrated the start of King Cake season with our Carnival Kickoff event," Samuels said. He continued, "What better way to start Carnival than by celebrating the arrival of King Cake."
The Carnival Kickoff event will feature the "Grand Arrival" of the Dong Phuong King Cakes plus music by local favorites Benny Grunch and the Bunch, breakfast by Pizza Nola's breakfast pop-up Bawk and coffee from Coast Roast. Television and Theatre Personality and Carnival Historian Professor Carl Nivale will cut the ceremonial first piece of king cake.
"We are honored and delighted once again to be partnering with Dong Phuong bakery for the fourth year," Samuels said. Located in New Orleans East, Dong Phuong has been serving the community for 30 years, and many area restaurants serve their French bread and pastries. Their King Cakes are made with a light, flaky rich pastry dough with a scalloped outer edge and topped with a cream cheese icing (instead of the powdered-sugar based frosting found on most other area king cakes). "Many customers last year told us that they were long-time king cake eaters, but Dong Phuong's is their new favorite," Samuels said. King Cakes will come in Tradition, Cream Cheese and (new for 2018) Pecan.
Pizza Nola will have King Cakes from Dong Phuong delivered daily (except Tuesdays). Cakes will be available for pre-ordering and pick-up at the restaurant as well as via delivery throughout the restaurant's normal delivery area. Online pre-orders made before December 31 (for pick up on January 6) are eligible for a 10% discount if you use code "KINGCAKE" at https://mkt.com/pizzanola. Cakes also will be available via online ordering through the restaurant's website,  PizzaNola.com and can be delivered throughout the New Orleans area by selecting Pizza Nola on the  UberEatsWaitr, or  GrubHub apps.
Pizza Nola is located at 141 W Harrison Ave in Lakeview and is open daily with dine-in and carryout service as well as delivery to 70124, 70005 and beyond.
The event is free. For more information, call Pizza Nola at  504-872-0731, or visit the event's Facebook site at

  • The inaugural New Orleans Tamale Festival is Jan. 6 at Poor Boy's Bar.

From fried chicken to po-boys, gumbo and beignets, New Orleans has festivals dedicated to so many indigenous dishes it can be hard to keep track. Next week, the Delta-style tamale gets its own party with the launch of the New Orleans Tamale Festival.

The festival takes place at Poor Boys Bar (1328 St. Bernard Ave.) Jan. 6 and pays homage to the region's tamale tradition.

Leading the charge is longtime downtown tamale hawker Holly Hawthorne, also known as Holly Tamale, and Angela Harbold of Medina's Good Tamales. The duo have been planning this festival for the better part of a year, Hawthorne says, and they envision the inaugural event as a small, neighborhood-friendly party.

Hawthorne has been slinging her family's generations-old tamale recipe from her bike since 2007. She grew up in Alexandria and learned the Zwolle tamale style.

"I thought, it's really great that new Orleans has this great history of Delta-style tamales, but we didn't have a festival that (celebrated) it," Hawthorne says. "This year, we decided to do it small, see what happens and maybe expand next year."

Hawthorne says she has gotten plenty of interest from restaurants wanting to particpate in the event. But for this year's fete, the festival is capped at six vendors, including Holly Tamale, Medina's Good Tamales and Mamita's Hot Tamales. There also will be smaller, lesser-known street tamale vendors - an effort, Hawthorne says, to "(keep) with the nature of how tamales have been made and sold in New Orleans for the past 100 or more years,"

Hawthorne will offer red chili pork tamales and a vegan black bean and corn version. There also will be chicken tamales, cheese tamales and a tamale filled with chocolate and strawberries.

The event runs from noon to 6 p.m. at the St. Bernard Avenue bar, which has indoor and outdoor space, so children and families can attend. Included in the day's festivities are a tamale-eating contest, the crowning of a New Orleans Tamale Queen and King and live music from Margie Perez, The Iguanas and Dat Band.

Entrance to the festival is free, and donations are accepted. For more information, visit the festival's website here.

City Encourages Residents to Recycle Christmas Trees for Coastal Restoration

NEW ORLEANS - Mayor Mitch Landrieu reminded residents that the City will continue its program of recycling Christmas trees in an effort to promote the restoration of Louisiana's wetlands and to assist in the protection of the Louisiana coastline. Orleans Parish residents, eligible for garbage collection by the City, are encouraged to recycle their Christmas trees by placing them curbside, before 5 a.m., on their regularly scheduled second collection day that occurs between Jan. 11-13, 2018 for properties served by Richard's Disposal and Metro Services. Properties in the French Quarter or DDD, served by Empire Services, should place their trees curbside before 4 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018.

Only natural, unflocked trees that are free of all stands and trimming can be recycled. All ornaments, tinsel, lights and tree stands must be removed before being placed curbside. Flocked, artificial trees, trees in bags or trees with trimming that have not been removed will be collected with garbage and transported to the landfill. Trees are not to be placed on neutral grounds as this delays the collection process.

The City's Department of Sanitation along with its solid waste contractors Metro Services, Richard's Disposal and Empire Services and the Office of Resilience and Sustainabilityare working together to collect, sort and bundle the trees, which will be placed in selected coastal zones.

This project is stewarded and funded by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability. Last year, more than 8,000 Christmas trees were collected in Orleans Parish after the holidays and airlifted by the Louisiana National Guard into the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge as part of a program to create new marsh habitat.

Residents seeking more information should call NOLA 3-1-1.
