Here's how Louisiana residents can buy tickets to see The Rolling Stones at Jazz Fest before anyone else
Buyers must present valid state ID at Superdome box office
The Rolling Stones will bring their world tour to Jazz Fest this May. To prevent overcrowding the Fair Grounds, limited tickets will be made available for that day, in what is sure to be a sold-out event.
The festival is offering Louisiana residents a chance to purchase tickets before the rest of the world can buy them.
This Thursday, January 17, tickets for the May 2 show can be bought in-person at the Plaza level box office of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Buyers must have valid Louisiana ID. The price is $185.
The box office will be open from 10:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. Buyers can start lining up at 12:01 a.m. Free parking will be offered in Superdome Garage 5.
Tickets to the general public for all days of the fest go on sale the following day, Friday, January 18. Tickets for the day of The Rolling Stones' performance are expected to sell out fast.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK:One-pan Farro with Tomatoes
This  one-pan farro with tomatoes  recipe is SO easy and SO delicious, and makes a perfect healthy weeknight dinner. It is easily adaptable, too, so feel free to add whatever veggies or proteins you like. You might want to double the recipe-- the leftovers are just as good for lunch the next day. Grab a pint or two of colorful hydroponically-grown tomatoes from Tomotts or Cajun Growers or high tunnel grown tomatoes from Poche Family Farm and give it a try.

One-pan Farro with Tomatoes
This  one-pan farro with tomatoes recipe is SO easy and SO delicious, and makes a perfect healthy weeknight dinner. It is easily adaptable, too, so feel free to add whatever veggies or proteins you like. You might want to double the recipe-- the leftovers are just as good for lunch the next day. Grab a pint or two of colorful hydroponically-grown tomatoes from Tomotts or Cajun Growers or high tunnel grown tomatoes from Poche Family Farm and give it a try.
Ingredients
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup (updated) semi-pearled farro (see Note above for farro types)
  • 1/2 large onion (I usually use a white one, for mildness)
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 9 ounces grape or cherry tomatoes
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons kosher or coarse sea salt
  • Up to 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, plus extra for drizzling
  • Few basil leaves, cut into thin ribbons
  • Grated parmesan cheese, for serving (optional)
Directions
Place water and farro in a medium saucepan to presoak (I find just 5 to 10 minutes sufficient) while you prepare the other ingredients. Adding each ingredient to the pot as you finish preparing it, cut the onion in half again, and very thinly slice it into quarter-moons. Thinly slice garlic cloves as well. Halve or quarter tomatoes. Add salt, pepper flakes (to taste) and 1 tablespoon olive oil to the pan, and set a timer for 30 minutes. Bring uncovered pan (no lid necessary) up to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally. When the timer rings, the farro should be perfectly cooked (tender but with a meaty chew), seasoned and the cooking water should be almost completely absorbed. If needed, though I've never found it necessary, cook it for 5 additional minutes, until farro is more tender.
Transfer to a wide serving bowl. If there's enough leftover cooking liquid to be bothersome, simply use a slotted spoon to leave the amount you wish to behind. Drizzle farro lightly with additional olive oil, scatter with basil and parmesan. Eat immediately. Repeat tomorrow.

Meet award-winning author Preston Lauterbach when he returns to Octavia Books to present and sign his new book, BLUFF CITY: The Secret Life of Photographer Earnest Withers.

Ernest Withers was a crucial witness to the cultural upheavals of the 1950s and '60s. A gifted photographer, he combined a storyteller's eye and an uncanny ability to bond with his subjects, resulting in a powerful visual record of the Civil Rights Era. But he had a secret: while creating key images of the Civil Rights Movement, Ernest Withers was acting as an informant for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In BLUFF CITY, Preston Lauterbach examines this conflicted life and complicated legacy, grappling with the question of how a single artist could lionize and immortalize a movement he genuinely supported and simultaneously conspire with the very forces determined to crush it.

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Withers photographed the three biggest events of the Civil Rights Movement's beginning: he created enduring images of Emmett Till's murder trial, the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and the desegregation of Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. He would go on to document the rise of Martin Luther King as the movement's most visible leader, the growth of the Black Power movement, and movement's crossover with other social movements, most prominently the anti-war movement. It was also during this time that Withers began operating as a spy for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Though Withers was sympathetic to the goals of the movement, he distrusted the influence of Communist leaders, the increasing militancy of younger activists, and the lack of patriotism he perceived in the allied Anti-war Movement. FBI reports show that, for decades, Withers provided direct data, photographs, and general analysis of events within the black community to the Bureau.

The contradictions of this secret double life came to a head during the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Worker Strike. Responding to unfair work conditions and the accidental deaths of two workers, hundreds went on strike and took to the streets bearing signs with the slogan: "I AM A MAN." On March 28th, the strike turned violent. The workers, who had previously been carrying the strike posters in their hands, had mounted them on wooden posts. When conflicts broke out between the protesters and police, the demonstration turned into a riot. The violence of the scene was exacerbated by the presence of hundreds of signposts that could now be used as makeshift weapons. And it was Ernest Withers who had provided the signposts.

Had Withers provided the signs simply to create a stronger visual? Had he, as certain misleading statements in the FBI records suggest, distributed the signposts in the hopes of encouraging violence among the strikers? Whatever the intention, Withers' actions played a role in tragically altering the course of the Civil Rights Movement: Martin Luther King, who was present and felt the violence was a stain on the record of his leadership, returned to Memphis a week later to redeem himself and prove the validity of his non-violent tactics. On this return trip, King would be assassinated.

Writing in crisp, stylish, and propulsive prose, Lauterbach recounts the life of one of America's most essential and under-recognized photographers. BLUFF CITY situates Ernest Withers in the rich culture of black Memphis and the conflicts of the struggle for equality, framed in a gripping narrative that culminates in the horror of the Sanitation Strike and the death of King. Lauterbach draws a sympathetic, but clear-eyed portrait of a complex and secretive man who attempted to navigate the era's dangerous waters according to his own moral compass, and whose compelling story of has never been more urgent or relevant.

Preston Lauterbach is the author of Beale Street Dynasty and The Chitlin' Circuit, a Wall Street Journal and Boston Globe book of the year. He is a former visiting scholar at Rhodes College and a Virginia Foundation for the Humanities Fellow. He lives near Charlottesville, Virginia.

Thursday, January 17th
6-7:30PM
On the far side the view was nothing but ridgelines, the craggy silhouettes rising up against the night sky like the body of some dormant god. Jodi felt her breath go tight in her chest...As much as she had desired to return here, this place was itself a prison of sorts, and she could feel herself dissolving into it. Coming home was like disappearing in a way, she thought, slipping back into the past.
Jodi McCarty was only seventeen when she was sentenced to life in prison for manslaughter. After her release, she returns to the Appalachian mountains she left behind, searching for someone from the past. The homecoming proves a shock to the system in many ways. When she meets and falls in love with Miranda, the two try to make a new start, which may be impossible in a place that refuses to adapt and change.Sugar Run is the story of a very unique and particular woman, a queer woman from a working class Appalachian background, at once childlike and fierce, blind and wise, and above all else, very full of heart.
This book is available in hardcover ($26.95).
Mesha Maren in conversation with Morgan Babst discussing her book,   Sugar Run Mesha will sign books afterward.
If you are unable to attend, you must call the  book shop  to order signed books.

Graced with photographs of the city's most famed works, histories of each piece and its location transport readers on a journey of elegance and beauty. From the famous cornstalk fence to the storied splendor of the Pontalba Buildings, these vignettes illuminate the rich tapestry of New Orleans's heritage.

Kit Wohl is an author and artist with a passion for the culinary arts. She works with chefs, restaurants and hotels across the country, and her artwork is held in collections across the Americas and Europe and includes chandeliers, railings and sculptures. New Orleans Icons: Iron Lace is her 12th book. Arnaud's Restaurant Cookbook: New Orleans Legendary Creole Cuisine, published by Pelican in 2005, received national acclaim, and The P&J Oyster Cookbook was named Cookbook of the Year by New Orleans Magazine. Her books in the Classics Series include New Orleans Classic Creole Recipes, New Orleans Classic Celebrations, New Orleans Classic Cocktails, New Orleans Classic Brunches, New Orleans Classic Desserts, New Orleans Classic Appetizers, New Orleans Classic Seafood, and New Orleans Classic Gumbos and Soups.

Armand Richardson, A Fire in My Lens

Through the vibrant images captured in his compositions, photographer Armand J. "Sheik" Richardson lures the viewer into the city that lives within his imagination. Richardson relates the experimentation that first brought to life the world he saw through his camera's lens. His anecdotes accompany each picture, providing context to the images while conveying the pallet of colors and textures that makes New Orleans such a unique place. From personal moments of his childhood, family, and friends to professional shoots and casual snapshots of the hidden life and everyday events in the city, Richardson presents a visual record of New Orleans.

Armand Richardson was born and raised in New Orleans. After a brief stint in the military, Richardson earned degrees and certifications from Loyola and Tulane Universities, Delgado Community College, and the University of New Orleans. He held many jobs before returning to his passion and opening Penumbra Photos in 1975, focusing on forensic and commercial photography. Richardson is also the founder of the Arabi Wrecking Krewe which provided disaster relief services for the city's culture bearers.

John R. Kemp, Auseklis Ozols

According to John Kemp, few great painters have had the uncanny ability to transition between the worlds of teacher and artist. He says Auseklis Ozols is one of them. Ozols founded the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts, where he emphasizes the classical disciplines of artistic instruction. In this biography, Kemp uses Ozols' own paintings to reveal the life of the artist and teacher dedicated to passing down the lessons of the great painters of the past.

John R. Kemp, a New Orleans native, writes about New Orleans and Louisiana for a number of regional and national magazines, including Art Antiques, ARTNews , American Artist , Louisiana Life, and Louisiana Cultural Vistas. He is deputy director of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. Kemp is also the author of several books, including Alan Flattmann's French Quarter Impressions.

THE WOLVES
by Sarah DeLappe
directed by Aimée Hayes

Performances, January  17   7:30pm        20     3pm
24 - 26th    7:30pm
31st - 2nd   7:30p,         3rd    3pm

Sarah DeLappe's Pulitzer Prize finalist debut play took New York by storm with its utterly fresh point of view. As a team of nine young women gears up for battle on the soccer field each week, their individual stories emerge. Physically astonishing and emotionally compelling,THE WOLVES shows us the complicated ferocity it takes to grow up.

THE WOLVES features actors Sarah Durn, Lauren Erwin, Helen Jaksch, Grace Kennedy, Wendy Miklovic, Keyara Milliner, Tirol Palmer, Haley Riemer, Emily Russell and Constance Thompson.

"Raucously funny, terribly sad, and never predictable, THE WOLVES offers a large-hearted but clear-eyed − almost mythic − look at the search for identity
in the crucible of adolescence."

The roller-coaster world of bipolar disorder will be explored in the upcoming Playmakers Theater musical production of "Next to Normal," taking audiences on a myriad of twists and turns of both laughter and tears. Opening Thursday, Jan. 17, at the theater's north Covington location, the play is a Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway musical that centers on the life of a mother suffering from mental illness.

The modern rock musical's plot line navigates the tumultuous ripple effects within the family and traverses the multilayered topics of grief, loss, self-awareness, anxiety and modern psychiatry.

"This show tells an important story that's needed in today's culture," director Justin Lapeyrouse said. "It opens the door for conversation so that people dealing with these issues know that they're not alone and that there is a light at the end of what can seem like an unending tunnel."

Opening night will be a special "NAMI Night," with the proceeds for all tickets sold to be donated to NAMI St. Tammany. Rotary Clubs of Covington and Northlake-Mandeville will each be donating $5 for every ticket sold for the Jan 17th opening "NAMI Night" of Next to Normal.  I.e. that will be an additional $10 for NAMI for each ticket sold, $5 coming from each club.

In addition to NAMI Night, NAMI St. Tammany will be involved in the full run of the show by providing informational literature at all performances. Playmakers also plans to host question-and-answer sessions after each of the matinees. These open forums will allow audiences to discuss the show and mental illness issues with cast members and mental health professionals.

Hot Buttered Rum Quick Bread

12 servings (serving size: 1 slice)
MARK SCARBROUGH
November 2007
RECIPE BY COOKING LIGHT
For the prettiest loaf, make sure the butter is chilled when beaten into the batter. You can use gold rum in place of dark, if you wish.
Ingredients
  • Cooking spray
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (4 1/2 ounces)
  • 1/4 cup whole wheat flour (1 1/4 ounces)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup chilled butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/3 cup egg substitute
  • 1/2 cup ripe mashed banana (about 1 banana)
  • 2 tablespoons dark rum
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
How to Make It
Step 1
Lightly coat an 8 x 4-inch loaf pan with cooking spray; dust with 1 1/2 teaspoons all-purpose flour. Set aside.
Step 2
Preheat oven to 350°.
Step 3
Lightly spoon 1 cup all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour into dry measuring cups; level with a knife. Combine flours, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg; stir with a whisk to combine.
Step 4
Combine sugar and 1/4 cup butter in a large bowl; beat with a mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes). Add egg substitute; beat until combined. Beat in banana, rum, and vanilla. Add flour mixture to banana mixture; beat on low speed just until combined. Scrape batter into prepared pan with a spatula; smooth top. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes; gently remove from oven, and drizzle top with 1 tablespoon melted butter. Bake an additional 10 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
NATIONAL BOOTLEGGER'S DAY
National Bootlegger's Day is observed annually on January 17.
January 17 is the birthday of Templeton Rye Whiskey, bootlegger Al Capone and the son of another bootlegger, Meryl Kerkhoff.
The earliest use of the term bootlegger was during the 1880s in the Midwest when one would conceal flasks of liquor in their boot tops when going to trade with Native Americans.
The term found its permanent place in the American vocabulary when Congress passed the Eighteenth Amendment prohibiting the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcohol in 1920.
Despite now being illegal, thirsty Americans still had a demand for liquor. While some distilleries switched their production to something legal, others took to bootlegging.
Bootleggers helped fill the demand by smuggling various brews from Canada and Mexico, and later distilling their own liquor in backwoods and secluded areas.  They brought their loot back to sell to speakeasies, individuals and other establishments.

Michelle Gueydan is a familiar name to our Swirl family.  Over the last decade, she has not only stood in as an employee and educator, but she and her dog Vino are also exuberant customers who frequently engage with others over food, wine, and fur-friendly treats!  Michelle believes in our mantra: Drink What YOU Like!  Nonetheless, she also believes that many of us are not often exposed to educational tasting experiences that could be considered outside of the ordinary/beyond comfort zones/daring to be different. To that end, she will lead a monthly educational tasting series at Swirl, aptly titled: Saturdays with a Somm, Exploring the Unexplored.  Each seminar will be seated, by reservation only, and the topics will be generated and posted one month prior.  Each "class" will be fun, educational and above all, adventurous!

Her first class is Saturday, January 19th, 6-7:30pm: Peculiar Piedmont & Frentastic Fruili:  Join Michelle for an exploration of two well recognized Northern Italian regions, but don't expect your typical Piedmontese Nebbiolo nor Friulian Pinot Grigio.  Instead, she will take you on a journey replete with varieties and blends that will surely expand your horizons - and your palate!  For $35, you will learn, taste and engage with 6 unique wines.  They may seem peculiar by name; they may seem frenetically wild; but they will surely engage your palate on a new adventure through some of our favorite Italian wine regions.  Reservations are required.  For more information about Michelle and to save your spot, go to Saturdays with a Somm

Wednesday Night Flight, Italy VS France, A Blind Bordeaux and Super Italian Tasting, January 23, 5:30-7:30 -Join David Sobiesk for a blind flight of 4 wines - 2 traditional Bordeaux and 2 Italian wines made with Bordeaux varieties. The wines will be presented blind, not as a test to see if you can determine which is which, although that will be fun as well, but to keep any preconceived notions of place out of the mix. What we really want to know is what you think. Is the quality similar? The taste? Do you prefer one bottle over another? And most importantly, do you like them? We'd love for you to participate in this very special event where Italy takes on the most prestigious red wine region in the world!  If you'd like a little something to snack on with your wine, resident cheesemonger Casey Foote will select and present a pairing plate ($10 with flight, $15 without the flight). No standing in line for our Wednesday flights - you sit at a table, we come to you and pour tableside complete with lots of educational info on what you are drinking. The flight of 3 wines is $20 - reservations are highly recommended as we can only seat walk-ins if space allows. All wines and cheeses are available for purchase to have at Swirl or you can take them to go.  You can make your reservations here:  Italy VS France

Bal Masqué is the major fundraiser for the Link Stryjewski Foundation, which supports New Orleans-based nonprofit organizations that nourish, educate and empower the City's youth. "This event  has been so successful because of the dedicated musicians and chefs who share their time and talent with us each  year," states Foundation Co-founder Chef Donald Link. "We are humbled by the support of our community and proud to partner with local organizations that positively impact the lives of so many New Orleans young people."

The Haitian band RAM will headline the fourth annual Link Stryjewski Foundation Bal Masqué. RAM's ancient, folkloric polyrhythms intertwine harmoniously with rock guitar riffs and swinging Caribbean keyboard melodies. Mixologist Neal Bodenheimer from Cure and Cane & Table will serve classic New Orleans and Caribbean-inspired cocktails throughout the evening. "The mash-up of celebrity chefs with live New Orleans Brass & Funk, Cajun Dancehall and Haitian Vodou Rock 'n' Roots music makes for one unforgettable evening," states Foundation Co-founder Chef Stephen Stryjewski. "We guarantee these chefs and musicians will bring a sell-out crowd."

Friday, January 18, 2019:  Celebrity Chef Andrew Carmellini will be joined by Chefs Link and Stryjewski to present an exquisite four-course dinner with wine pairings at Calcasieu, Link Restaurant Group's private event space. This exclusive event is available for only 150 guests and will include a live auction. Carmellini is Chef/Owner of Locanda Verde, The Dutch, Lafayette, and Leuca (New York City). As executive chef and partner of A Voce, Carmellini won a Michelin star. Announcing our new music director:
Clifford McPeek!
Over 30 years as a professional musician and music teacher. He plays and teaches all brass instruments as well as guitar, bass and beats.

As well as learning to play music your child will learn to read music!

Clifford brings so many fun ways to explore music and music theory!

But he can't do it all... percussion teacher Patrick Driscoll keeps the rhythm rolling. This is Patrick's 3rd year with Art Klub and the kids love him! So if its drums your child wants, Patrick has that covered.

Who: Kids Ages 9 & Up
When: Mondays, Jan 7- Feb 28
Time: 4:30pm-6:00pm
Length: 8 weeks
Cost: $150
Scholarships available.

We are extremely excited to bring you this inspiring Kids Brass Jam curriculum! Kids Brass Jam is a weekly recurring educational program that teaches, mentors and inspires students through music instruction on trombone, trumpet, sousaphone and drums, as well as music theory and learning how to read music.

Thanks to the support from Threadhead Cultural Foundation, Preservation Hall Foundation, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Red Dress Run Hash House Harriers and Griffin Family Foundation, we are able to offer this unique music curriculum.

Students will have an opportunity to explore all of the instruments, however please let us know which instrument your student is most interested in playing. Some instruments will be provided on site but it is best if your musician has their own. Please let us know if you need information purchasing or renting an instrument while at the Art Klub, or if they already have their own.

We strive to instill a love for playing and listening to music with community centered programming. In the spring, the Art Klub Kids Brass Band will perform a concert!

Witness the magic of New Orleans brass band traditions and Louisiana music and cultural heritage played by the promising talent of the St. Roch neighborhood and surrounding 504 area youth musicians. Let us celebrate big brass music and New Orleans rising talent.

PURPOSE
Because the Algiers story is often left out of the New Orleans historical narrative, Algiers will celebrate its Tricentennial in 2019. The goal is to tell the story of Algiers - from its beginnings in 1719 to the War of 1812, to the rail and maritime industries in the early 19th century to the varied communities that comprise Algiers today. The celebration is about building pride in Algiers, educating and entertaining people through our culture and creating oral histories that will remain forever.
As we honor our past, we can inspire our future through economic, educational and cultural programs and advocating for appropriate development in communities throughout Algiers.

EVENTS
Several public events and activities are being planned. Some of the major ones are as follows:
  • Zulu in Algiers - 2019 King Zulu and Algiers native George Rainey will hold a "flag raising" ceremony and reign over a special day of fun being planned for February 2, 2019, near the ferry terminal in Old Algiers.

  • NOMTOC Parade - Activities are being planned during the annual NOMTOC parade, the only remaining Algiers Mardi Gras parade, to celebrate and raise awareness of Algiers cultural history. March 2, 2019.

  • Jazz Walk of Fame - Algiers Point Association will unveil the upgraded Jazz Walk of Fame along the riverfront in Old Algiers. Scheduled for spring 2019.

  • Trans-Atlantic Slave Marker Ceremony and Installation - Old Algiers Main Street Corporation will host an event in commemoration of the thousands of enslaved Africans who disembarked on the riverfront in Old Algiers.
OTHER PROGRAMS
  • New Orleans Historical App - In partnership with the University of New Orleans, the Algiers page of this mobile app will provide information on and points of interest. Suggestions and content are welcome. Launch in January 2019.

  • Your Story, Our Story - Beginning in January, there will be opportunities for oral histories at the Algiers Regional Library and the Hubbell Library. Dates TBD

  • Lectures and Edu-tainment - Jazz historians and performers, Mardi Gras Indians and authors will provide learning opportunities for all ages. Dates TBD.

  • Art and Photography Exhibits - Throughout the year, the Algiers Courthouse, libraries and other venues will display historical artifacts and works by local artists.

  • History Tours - Dates and details TBD.

  • Shopping, Dining and Fun - Merchant promotions during Mardi Gras, French Quarter Fest, Small Business Saturday and the Algiers Bonfire.

  • Finale - Festival and celebration of history and culture with music, food, holiday lighting event and more. December 2019.
