WHEN: Wed August 22 at 9:30 a.m.
WHERE: 4918 Warrington Drive, New Orleans
At the 13th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the grassroots non-profit Levees.org will unveil
Phase One of its proposed Flooded House Museum in the Filmore Gardens neighborhood of New Orleans.
City Councilman Jared Brossett, District D has confirmed attendance.
For a limited time, visitors can view the artistic rendering of a typical family room in New Orleans - filled with music and love - the day before the levees broke.
The unique project required a special permit from the City Planning Commission converting a once flooded residence 400 feet from the London Avenue Canal east breach site into an educational memorial.
Like a diorama, the exhibit will be visible through the windows.
A tent will protect the press conference attendees from sun and rain.
In 2016, Levees.org purchased the gutted house, and in partnership with the neighborhood residents, obtained the special permitting.
Volunteer contractors then installed walls, a doorway and a foyer to give dimension to the flooded remains. After that, volunteer artists staged the room using donated furniture and items from dozens of Levees.org supporters.
In Phase Two, starting after Labor Day, artists will "distress" the staged exhibit to create a flooded replica effect using theater art and scenic design techniques.
The final exhibit will replicate what homes in the neighborhood may have looked like after the Army Corps of Engineers' floodwall failed and homeowners returned from their flood-imposed exile.
This one-of-a-kind project is due to the hard work, time and talent of scores of volunteers in the fields of history, art, civil engineering, construction, photography and more.
The ribbon cutting for the completed Flooded House Museum will take place in November.
Those wishing to contribute to maintaining the exhibit (electricity and water for gardens) are invited to so so here:

VENDOR OF THE WEEK:Monica's Okra World
Monica's Okra World is celebrating 22 years at the market this summer! The Monica's 150 acre farm (currently farming 50 acres) is located up the river in St James Parish, where the sweet creole soil runs deep in their veins. Christina Monica has been doing this since the 5th grade, following the footsteps of her father, who was a sugarcane farmer his whole life. The family has been selling in the French Market and roadside in LaPlace for about 30 years before starting at CCFM. They have been instrumental in our market success and the success of farm to table, supplying restaurants, and so much more since the very beginning. This year-round, never-miss-a-market vendor is sure to have what you need every Tuesday and Saturday morning.
TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:Rimon
New to the Green Plate Special is Rimon! Rimon is a kosher, farm-to-table restaurant located inside the gorgeous Hillel building on Tulane's campus. CCFM alum Chef Daniel Esses of Esses Foods and Three Muses, serves up seasonal, local, and delicious food to the Tulane community. Dishes at Rimon are made using pasture-raised beef and lamb, responsibly raised poultry, local gulf fish, and freshly baked bread and pastries. Check out this week's menu here!
RECIPE OF THE WEEK:Butternut Squash Creamy Pasta Sauce
With kids back in school, we look for every opportunity to get tasty, healthful meals on the table, while we're still adjusting to the new schedule. Butternut squash is abundant in the summer, but can be stored for long periods and be used during the winter, which is how the winter squash (butternut, acorn, kabocha, delicata, etc.) get this designation. Used in place of cheese in a pasta recipe like this is a healthy way to sneak veg into a dish everyone can enjoy. Feel free to incorporate cream for a richer sauce, or add fried sage leaves to the dish, or just to the plate of the grown ups at the table, depending on your kid's pallet. And much of the cook time is hands off, freeing you up for homework help.

Ingredients
1 Small Butternut Squash
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1 Medium Onion
2 Cloves Garlic
Pinch Black Pepper
125ml Vegetable Stock/Water
1 Tablespoon Natural Yogurt (or for vegan use 1 tablespoon of almond milk)
Directions
Preheat oven to 180ºC
Peel the butternut squash, cut in half to deseed and then cut into chunks. Drizzle with the olive oil and roast for about 40 minutes (or until it is soft).
Meanwhile finely chop the onion. Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a frying pan and gently fry the onion until it starts to turn sweet and sticky. This takes about 10 minutes but it's so worth it.
Add the garlic to the pan and cook for a further 3 or so minutes stirring well to make sure it doesn't burn.
Add in the butternut squash and all the remaining ingredients to the pan and reduce heat to a simmer for 10 minutes.
While the sauce is cooking bring a pot of water to the boil and cook your pasta as per the package instructions.
When the pasta is cooked, drain and leave to the side.
Add all of the sauce ingredients to your blender and blend until smooth and creamy then pour over your pasta stirring well to coat each and every piece.

The list of firms vying to redevelop the vacant former Charity Hospital building is down to two, with one of three firms in the running opting not to submit a proposal.
Officials said the firm Matthews Southwest did not submit plans by the state-imposed deadline of 10 a.m. Monday "due to the unexpected passing of a principal team member last week."
That leaves two firms still vying to revitalize the giant building on Tulane Avenue: 1532 Tulane Partners and HRI Properties, both of which submitted proposals by the deadline.
LSU's Real Estate and Facilities Foundation, which is overseeing the selection process, did not release the two proposals Monday. But the foundation said it would make them public before Oct. 4, when LSU's Board of Supervisors could select a winner.
The three firms on the short list were picked as finalists in a process that is now being overseen by the foundation, which is an affiliate of the fundraising LSU Foundation. The companies were invited to bid in a request for proposals issued May 25.
The two responses received will be reviewed by the LSU Charity Hospital Redevelopment Project Management Committee, which will make a recommendation to the real estate foundation. The foundation will then make a recommendation to the LSU Board of Supervisors.
The three firms invited to respond to the May solicitation were also the primary contenders to redevelop Charity in 2015, when then-Gov. Bobby Jindal sought proposals for reusing the more than 1-million-square-foot art deco building.
Charity has been vacant since the basement flooded during Hurricane Katrina; the rest of the 20-story structure remains largely intact.

Deanie's Seafood Restaurants Announces
Ribbon Cutting of New Restaurant Tuesday
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CDT
Celebrating Opening of Deanie's Sea Food Kitchen in Uptown New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS─The New Orleans Chamber of Commerce will celebrate with the owners of Deanie's Seafood Restaurants as they cut the ribbon on their new location in Uptown New Orleans at noon, Tues., Aug. 21.
Deanie's Sea Food Kitchen, located in a two-story building at 2200 Magazine St. at the intersection of the Irish Channel and Garden District, is the third location of the family-owned and -operated Deanie's Seafood Restaurants.
Delivering the same flavors as the legendary restaurant known for its seafood offerings, Deanie's Sea Food Kitchen is a contemporary outpost of the legendary New Orleans restaurant group. Deanie's Seafood Restaurant, located at 1713 Lake Ave., Metairie, which opened in the Bucktown neighborhood in Jefferson Parish in 1961, is one of the most enduring names for New Orleans-style seafood.
"We are overjoyed to open our newest location in our home town and are committed to living up to the Deanie's standard, which has earned a reputation as an established, recommended local favorite consistently recognized as one of the top seafood restaurants in New Orleans," said Deanie's Sea Food Kitchen Owner/Manager Chandra Chifici-Scarber. "Both Uptown locals and visitors will now be able to enjoy fresh Louisiana seafood offerings like seasonal boiled seafood, fried seafood, crawfish etouffee, barbeque shrimp, crabmeat au gratin and po boys for which Deanie's is known."
Deanie's Sea Food Kitchen is the first new Deanie's location since Deanie's Seafood Restaurant in the French Quarter was introduced on the corner of Iberville and Dauphine streets in 2001. Located at the corner of Jackson Avenue, Deanie's Sea Food Kitchen seats approximately 175 guests and features a spacious second-story wrap-around balcony for outdoor dining with a beautiful view of the New Orleans skyline. The new design features a raw and charbroiled oyster station and an open kitchen layout with an oversized, fabricated metal-lighted "Deanie's" sign mounted above the kitchen, a long dining bar extending to a full bar, and counter seating facing Magazine Street. A second full bar and additional seating is available upstairs, with special accents such as exposed bulb lighting fixtures, rough-hewn wood tables, and vintage oyster baskets lining the ceiling. The restaurant's open ceiling and steel embellishments provide an industrial yet warm atmosphere, with historic, homegrown touches throughout the space, including vintage signs and black-and-white fishing photography by local photographer Bevil Knapp.
The newest Deanie's restaurant resides in a colorful, eclectic neighborhood with a diverse mix of locals and tourists close to Magazine Street shops, restaurants and galleries, the St. Charles Streetcar line, Garden District walking tours and antebellum homes. It's also a short distance from Loyola and Tulane Universities, Audubon Park and Audubon Zoo. Deanie's Sea Food Kitchen is open for lunch and dinner seven days per week.
The full Deanie's Sea Food Kitchen Menu is available online at Deanies.com. The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant can be reached at (504) 962-7760.

Renowned jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan created Jazz Pilates which is set to the recorded music of major jazz composers like John Coltrane, Kidd Jordan, and Kent Jordan. Stephanie Jordan developed her Jazz Pilates technique after receiving her certification from Wise Body Pilates. Jazz Pilates integrates traditional Pilates and dance movements with jazz to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection. It is a muscle lengthening and strengthening program designed to improve balance and transform the body so that it functions at optimal capacity.
Jordan believes that the whole fitness movement is too focused on "Buy a membership, join a spa, purchase this equipment and you'll be beautiful." Jazz Pilates participants are able to use what they were born with-their bodies. The New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old US Mint provides the perfect venue to allow French Market District/ New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park visitors to create movements that is beneficial to both physical and mental health-in a mere 45 - minutes to an hour. Participants are introduced to the works of major jazz composers and performers while developing a lifelong physical fitness and emotional wellness through arts and fitness integration.
With all of the distractions in the world, the human body naturally retains the basic urge to create movement, to physically "get a lot of stuff out." In a city with an appetite for fresh approaches to culinary trends, the food hall and pop-up dining movement has become a fixture in New Orleans' edible landscape. And, these concepts are booming everywhere, with reports showing the number of food halls operating in the United States will exceed 200 by 2019, an increase of 700% since 2010.
Food halls and pop-ups have proven advantageous for entrepreneurs looking to grow and scale new culinary ventures. These concepts typically have lower startup costs and overhead, help increase brand awareness, and give chefs a chance to experiment with less risk and fear of closure.
Join The Idea Village for a night of conversation (and happy hour specials!) at New Orleans' newest food hall, Pythian Market, where we will dig into the benefits of seeking alternative restaurants concepts, touch on industry themes, and highlight ways food entrepreneurs can take things to the next level.

Washed Ashore Sculptures Land at Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and Audubon Zoo
Giant Aquatic Sculptures Made From Plastic Pollution Make Aquarium Debut
In celebration of World Oceans Day, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is announcing its latest conservation initiative: "Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea.'' This limited-time special exhibition features larger-than-life aquatic animal sculptures crafted from plastic trash collected from beaches and designed to educate a global audience about the threat that plastic pollution poses for the ecosystems of the world's oceans and waterways.
Made entirely of debris removed from Pacific Coast beaches, the "Washed Ashore'' traveling exhibit offers visitors a powerful, visual reality of the proliferation of pollution in the world's waterways through marine animal representations that use thousands of pieces of plastic in every color of the rainbow.
Examples include sculptures of a 10-foot Sea Jelly, a 10-foot-long leaping Marlin named "Flash,'' a 1,500-pound Great White Shark named "Greta'' and 12 other large aquatic animals. As part of the exhibit, Sebastian James the Tufted Puffin and SeeMore the Sea Lion Pup will be on display at Audubon Zoo.
"Plastics have entered into all marine habitats and every level of the ocean food chain,'' said Rich Toth, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas managing director.
''Whales, fish, zooplankton and numerous other animals are eating our trash. Approximately 80 percent of marine debris comes from land-based sources - streets to streams to rivers to oceans.''

Settling Darkness By Paul Heingarten
Ana Crucinal and Nelson Forrester find themselves even deeper in the fight than they could've ever imagined. The Action, now joined up with Lebabolis again as the Coalition, faces down the mysterious Omegans, an alien race that seems only bent on raiding Earth for one of her last remaining resources. Ana is being tormented by strange telepathic messages, and Nelson feels ever pulled toward Cataclysm, the weapon that could finally turn the tide of the fight. But others have their sights on Cataclysm too, and the race is on to get the upper hand and retake control. Will the Coalition get what they need to stop the Omegans? Will Ana learn just who this strange voice is, and just how important she is to restoring order in the world?
Paul Heingarten writes science fiction and fantasy, with the occasional detour into general fiction. His novel Cataclysm Epoch was selected as a semi-finalist in the 2017 William Faulkner-William Wisdom Writing Competition in New Orleans. His short stories include The Harvest, The Monitor, and Natural Election. He is an IT professional and a musician.
Can Everybody Swim? By Bruce Snow
We stood chest deep in water as we watched the female police officer remove the man from his wheelchair restraints. Steadying the man, she turned to us and asked, "Can Everybody Swim?" News coverage surrounding Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath captured America's rapt attention and swelled our hearts. Stories of lawlessness and violence still abound from the flooded City. Who can forget the Louisiana Superdome? Can Everybody Swim? takes readers on on a journey through the maelstrom. A shortage of cash combined with a fierce loyalty to protect the Gentilly neighborhood family home purchased by his Ecuadorian immigrant grandparents led the then 25-year-old author and his family to remain in their city to weather the storm, including enduring six days in the infamous Superdome.
Bruce Snow fills his spare time with writing and various musical endeavors. He is currently working on several fiction projects. Bruce earned a BA in History from the University of New Orleans, and lived in Little Rock from 2008 until returning to New Orleans in the fall of 2016.
Waiting for You at Midnight by Vicki Salloum
In the months following her husband's death, Arabella Joseph realizes she has no one with whom to share her most intimate thoughts and feelings. So she begins writing to her best friend--her dead husband--in a spiral notebook, telling him about her days and nights in the aftermath of his death. She describes in detail how she feels about the three men she variously meets while attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. In words funny, naughty, and moving, she re-lives the scenes of her romantic encounters and jiltings and crushes that go nowhere as well as beautiful nights spent with one of the men. In the course of her writings, she exposes her ferocious love for her dead husband even as she searches for someone to take his place. This "manuscript with no identity," as Arabella calls it, is not only a celebration of her husband's life but a deeply felt journey into the forbidden territory of an older woman's sexuality, grief, and alcoholism and her efforts to find enduring love while mourning the loss of her greatest love.
Vicki Salloum was born and raised in Gulfport. Vicki was a staff writer for three newspapers, including The Miami Herald. She began writing fiction when she was in her late 30s. Her three other published novels are Candyland (2016), Faulkner & Friends (2014), and A Prayer to Saint Jude (2012). Her short fiction has been included in the anthologies When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple, Pass/Fail: 32 Stories About Teaching, Voices From the Couch, and Umpteen Ways of Looking at a Possum: Critical and Creative Responses to Everette Maddox. She holds an MFA in creative writing from Louisiana State University.

No. We will have a list with attendee names.
