FRESH & LOCAL:We <3 Farmers Markets
Let's celebrate Farmers Markets! The Crescent City Farmers Market began in 1995 and has been bringing eaters and producers together in celebration of local food, community, and health ever since. CCFM operates five markets in the Greater New Orleans area and we are home to more than 60 vendors located within 200 miles of New Orleans. Our market has accepted SNAP since 2005 and has been doubling SNAP purchases up to $20 each market since 2008. We incubate small businesses, provide regional and national support, and educate people of all ages about the importance of eating fresh, local food.
Join us at our Tuesday Uptown, Thursday Mid-City, and Saturday CBD markets this week for cooking demos featuring: Chef Marcus Jacobs (one of Louisiana Cookin's 2018 Chefs to Watch) of Marjie's Grill, Chef Aaron Burgau (a King of Louisiana Seafood winner and James Beard award nominee) of Crescent City Barbecue and Patois, and Chef Parvin Macari of Casa Borrega (a 2018 Top Taco New Orleans winner and one of our very favorite Green Plate Special vendors). We'll also have live music by Aaron Berenson and The Bad Oyster Band, fun contests and market swag (see below), plus all of the amazing food and vendors you love to see at the market.
VENDOR OF THE WEEK:VEGGI Farmers Cooperative
Big news for VEGGI! They just submitted their application for Mountain Rose Herbs' Giving Projectwho believes that people, plants, and planet are more important than profit. VEGGI currently has land that is not being fully utilized on their farm. It was once used to raise chickens and ducks, but was abandoned due to predators and theft. They plan to clean the vegetation, create a secure perimeter with a natural vegetation barrier of fruit trees and climbing plants, and raise chickens and ducks to incorporate into their organic farming and composting structure. Check out this videoto see where VEGGI Farmers Cooperative has come from and where they are going, and donate to help them reach their goal!
TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL:Rimon
New to the Green Plate Special pop-up is restaurant Rimon! Rimon is a kosher, farm-to-table restaurant located inside the gorgeous Hillel building on Tulane's campus. In Hebrew, Rimon means pomegranate, which symbolizes wisdom and knowledge in the Jewish tradition. With these values in mind, CCFM alum Chef Daniel Esses of Esses Foods, serves up seasonal, local, and delicious food to the Tulane community. Rimon's eclectic menu features cuisine from all over the world, focusing on Israeli and Korean flavors. Dishes at Rimon are made using pasture-raised beef and lamb, responsibly raised poultry, local gulf fish, and freshly baked bread and pastries. Stop by every Tuesday in August from 9-1pm!
RECIPE OF THE WEEK:Smothered Okra And Tomatoes
Are you tired of okra yet? No? Good! Check out this Emerils recipe for smothered okra and tomatoes, a classic in Southern Louisiana cuisine. While some veggies are calling it quits for the summer, okra is abundant and here for the long haul, but that's okay because it is delicious and nutritious. Pair it with some last of the season tomatoes and you are good to go!

Smothered Okra And Tomatoes
Are you tired of okra yet? No? Good! Check out this Emerils recipe for smothered okra and tomatoes, a classic in Southern Louisiana cuisine. While some veggies are calling it quits for the summer, okra is abundant and here for the long haul, but that's okay because it is delicious and nutritious. Pair it with some last of the season tomatoes and you are good to go!
Ingredients
  • 2 pounds okra
  • 3 cups chopped onions
  • 2 cups chopped celery
  • 3 cups chopped, peeled, and seeded tomatoes, or 3 cups chopped canned tomatoes
  • 5 bay leaves
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 2 tablespoons chopped garlic
Directions
Preheat the oven to 300ºF.
Wash the okra under cool water. Cut off the stems and slice each pod crosswise into 1/2-inch rounds.
Combine the okra and the rest of the ingredients in a large heavy ovenproof pot, not cast iron. Mix well. Cover the pot with a lid. Bake, stirring occasionally, for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until the slime has disappeared. Bake, uncovered, for the last 15 minutes of the cooking time. The time will vary, depending on the tenderness of the okra. Remove the bay leaves.
Serve immediately.

For the next three months, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas will be home to six of artist Angela Pozzi's creations, including sculptures of a 10-foot Sea Jelly, a 10-foot-long leaping Marlin named "Flash'' and a 1,500-pound Great White Shark named "Greta.'' Sebastian James the Tufted Puffin has been on display near the entrance to Audubon Zoo for about a month.
In October, nine more sculptures will be added to the collection at the Aquarium and one more will join the Tufted Puffin at the Zoo. The sculptures will be on display through April 30, 2019.

Washed Ashore Sculptures Land at Audubon Aquarium of the Americas and Audubon Zoo
Giant Aquatic Sculptures Made From Plastic Pollution Make Aquarium Debut

In celebration of World Oceans Day, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is announcing its latest conservation initiative: "Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea.'' This limited-time special exhibition features larger-than-life aquatic animal sculptures crafted from plastic trash collected from beaches and designed to educate a global audience about the threat that plastic pollution poses for the ecosystems of the world's oceans and waterways.
Made entirely of debris removed from Pacific Coast beaches, the "Washed Ashore'' traveling exhibit offers visitors a powerful, visual reality of the proliferation of pollution in the world's waterways through marine animal representations that use thousands of pieces of plastic in every color of the rainbow.
Examples include sculptures of a 10-foot Sea Jelly, a 10-foot-long leaping Marlin named "Flash,'' a 1,500-pound Great White Shark named "Greta'' and 12 other large aquatic animals. As part of the exhibit, Sebastian James the Tufted Puffin and SeeMore the Sea Lion Pup will be on display at Audubon Zoo.
"Plastics have entered into all marine habitats and every level of the ocean food chain,'' said Rich Toth, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas managing director.
''Whales, fish, zooplankton and numerous other animals are eating our trash. Approximately 80 percent of marine debris comes from land-based sources - streets to streams to rivers to oceans.''

The renovation of the property at 300 Gravier St. will modernize its 316 guest rooms and suites, refresh its lounge and 3,700-square-foot ballroom and add a bar and eatery overlooking the hotel's 65-foot saltwater pool.
Waterside Poolside Bar first opened to hotel and spa guests in April and will open to the public via Resort Pass in August, a news release said.

The renovations are scheduled to be completed by early October.

The hotel most recently underwent renovations in 2012 which included new décor in its guest rooms, refurbishments in the food and beverage outlets and other public spaces and the addition of The Spa at Windsor Court.

Two streetcar stops on hold as Four Seasons construction begins

The redevelopment of the former World Trade Center into a $450 million Four Seasons hotel and residences is temporarily suspending two streetcar stops.
Service at the Poydras Street and Julia Street stations on the Riverfront streetcar line is on hold for the next year, beginning Sunday. A news release from Regional Transit Authority cites safety concerns as the reason.
The streetcar will run between the French Market and Canal Street stations during this time. Four Seasons is providing a free looped shuttle service along the Riverfront route from the Canal Street station to the Julia Street station from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.
The hotel project by developer Carpenter & Co. will put more than 300 guest rooms, 80 hotel condos, a restaurant, rooftop pool, spa and 28,000 square feet of meeting space into the 33-story tower at the foot of Canal Street. Boston-based CambridgeSeven is the lead architect.

Tuesday,
4:00 PM 5:00 PM
Every 1st & 3rd Tuesday!

Renowned jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan created Jazz Pilates which is set to the recorded music of major jazz composers like John Coltrane, Kidd Jordan, and Kent Jordan. Stephanie Jordan developed her Jazz Pilates technique after receiving her certification from Wise Body Pilates. Jazz Pilates integrates traditional Pilates and dance movements with jazz to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection. It is a muscle lengthening and strengthening program designed to improve balance and transform the body so that it functions at optimal capacity.

Jordan believes that the whole fitness movement is too focused on "Buy a membership, join a spa, purchase this equipment and you'll be beautiful." Jazz Pilates participants are able to use what they were born with-their bodies. The New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old US Mint provides the perfect venue to allow French Market District/ New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park visitors to create movements that is beneficial to both physical and mental health-in a mere 45 - minutes to an hour. Participants are introduced to the works of major jazz composers and performers while developing a lifelong physical fitness and emotional wellness through arts and fitness integration.

With all of the distractions in the world, the human body naturally retains the basic urge to create movement, to physically "get a lot of stuff out." Jazz Pilates is designed to improve balance and transform the body so patrons may function at optimal capacity while working, playing, or just living life to the fullest.

Please bring your own fitness mat and arrive at least 10 minutes before class begins.

Louis Armstrong's cornet from when he was a resident of the Municipal Waif's Home for Boys, 1913-14

Through dynamic interactive exhibits, multigenerational educational programming, research facilities and engaging musical performances, the music New Orleans made famous is explored in all its forms.

Housed in the historic Old U.S. Mint, strategically located at the intersection of the French Quarter and the Frenchmen Street live music corridor, the New Orleans Jazz Museum is in the heart of the city's vibrant music scene.

Through partnerships with local, national and international educational institutions, the New Orleans Jazz Museum promotes the global understanding of jazz as one of the most innovative, historically pivotal musical art forms in world history.

Jazz Collection

The New Orleans Jazz Museum's collection is the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the world.

The Jazz Collection chronicles the music and careers of the men and women who created, enhanced and continue in the tradition of New Orleans jazz at the local, national and international levels. It consists of instruments, pictorial sheet music, photographs, records, tapes, manuscripts and other items ranging from Louis Armstrong's first coronet to a 1917 disc of the first jazz recording ever made. It includes the world's largest collection of instruments owned and played by important figures in jazz- trumpets, cornets, trombones, clarinets and saxophones played by jazz greats such as Bix Beiderbecke, Edward "Kid" Ory, George Lewis, Sidney Bechet and Dizzy Gillespie.

Other artifacts in the Jazz Collection include some 12,000 photographs from the early days of jazz; recordings in a wide variety of formats, including over 4,000 78 rpm records that date from 1905 to the mid-1950s, several thousand 12-inch LPs and 45 rpm records, approximately 1,400 reel-to-reel tapes; posters, paintings and prints; hundreds of examples of sheet music from late 19th-century ragtime to popular songs of the 1940s and 1950s - many of them first editions that became jazz standards; several hundred rolls of film featuring concert and nightclub footage, funerals, parades, and festivals; hundred of pieces of relevant ephemera; and architectural fragments from important jazz venues...

So she begins writing to her best friend--her dead husband--in a spiral notebook, telling him about her days and nights in the aftermath of his death. She describes in detail how she feels about the three men she variously meets while attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

Gallier Gathering
Monograms, Tagging, and Tattoos
Similarities and Differences in Three Unique Forms of Cultural Expressions
featuring Nancy Sharon Collins
August 8th - 6 p.m.
Look around, what do you see?
Monograms on T-shirts and sweatshirts and cars, tagging on walls, tattoos on areas of bodies never dreamed of before. What do these have in common? How do they differ? Stationer Nancy Sharon Collins will delve into the similarities and differences between three highly individual forms of cultural expressions: monogramming, graffiti/tagging, and tattooing. Brief histories of each form will be examined, visual examples will be shared, and ideas and norms that surround each will be presented and considered for discussion. Followed by Q & A which, Mrs. Collins anticipates, will be lively.

BIO:

She taught graphic design at various south Louisiana colleges and universities and partners with local cultural institutions presenting lectures and workshops on professional and social issues such as letter writing, life-style entrepreneurship, monograms and ciphers.

Author Event!

Stephen Rea Talks About the Biggest Sports Event Ever:

In His New Book, World Cup Fever

METAIRIE - Stephen Rea, will discuss his new book, World Cup Fever, A Fan's Guide to the Stars, Teams, Stories, Controversy, and Excitement of Sports' Greatest Event, at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.

This event is free of charge and is open to the public. There is no registration.

Chapters highlight upsets, immortal players such as Pelé, Maradona, Zidane, Iniesta, Beckenbauer, Cruyff, and more, and the most thrilling games from every tournament, starting with tales of the 13 teams that played in Uruguay 1930.

The opening chapter offers a crash course in World Cup history, including a story about the captain of the France team in the first World Cup in 1930 who was shot years later by the French resistance for collaborating with the Nazis. There are also stories of the Yugoslavia team having to play a man short against hosts Brazil in 1950 due to a player banging his head on the way to the field from the dressing room, and one about the 1966 tournament in England, where organizers had to move a game away from Wembley due to a scheduling clash with the weekly dog races.

Chapter three covers the USA's historical adventures in the World Cup. Highlights include the victory over England in 1950 in Brazil, still one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, as well as more recent triumphs in South Korea and South Africa.

There's also a chapter focusing on some of the best players never to have played in a World Cup. Rea also picks his top 10 World Cup games through the history of the tournament, culminating in Germany's 7-1 semi-final thrashing of Brazil on home soil in the last tournament.

Stephen Rea is a freelance writer who has been watching the World Cup for four decades. He is originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland but has lived in New Orleans since 2004. A former national newspaper journalist in the UK, he penned the critically-acclaimed memoir Finn McCool's Football Club and writes a weekly column for the official website of the English Premier League club Chelsea.

HexFest 2018: A Weekend of Witchery in Old New Orleans

Tales of the magic of the Crescent City of New Orleans stretch back over centuries. It is an enigmatic place where Voodoo, Hoodoo, Witchcraft, and even Christianity blend at a crossroads of spiritual power. On August 10 - 12, 2018, Brian Cain, Christian Day, and the Witches of New Orleans present HexFest: A Weekend of Witchery held in the heart of the historic French Quarter. The conference opens with a Riverboat Ritual and Dinner, held on an authentic steamboat on the Mississippi River, followed by two full days of workshops, drumming, and ritual at The Bourbon Orleans Hotel, a venue riddled with a history of hauntings. HexFest has gathered Witches, rootworkers, Voodoo priests and other magical teachers from within New Orleans and around the world to offer their time-honored wisdom. Between workshops, attendees will love the magical shopping in our on-site vending area where you can purchase powerful ritual tools, signed books, exquisite jewelry, and spellcrafts handmade by true practitioners!

Featured presenters for 2018 hail from across the spectrum of Witchcraft and magic. Our presenters include Brian Cain, Christian Day, Christopher Penczak, Judika Illes, Jason Miller, Fiona Horne, Jason Mankey, Edain McCoy, Krystal Madison, Witchdoctor Utu, Dragon Ritual Drummers, Star Casas, Val Hughes, Lady Rhea, Lilith Dorsey, Rosemary Ellen Guiley, Leanne Marrama, Christine Stephens, Elie Barnes, Sandra Mariah Wright, Sen Moise, Priestess Miriam, Carie Ewers, Austin Shippey, Sen Elias, Rozi Adam, Levi Rowland, Priestess Claudia, and Maria Cabot!

HexFest registration includes admittance to all workshops, rituals, and performances at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, passage and dining on our opening Riverboat Ritual, participation in any included walking tours, and access to our vending area. Your hotel stay must be booked separately in advance so call the hotel directly at (504) 571-4626 to book your room! Time is allotted for lunch and workshops end at 6:15 pm so you're able to explore the rich cultural offerings of New Orleans: try the Crescent City's incredible Creole and Cajun restaurants, shop the legendary magical boutiques of the French Quarter, and enjoy the live Jazz that was born in the Big Easy.

Vieux Carré by Tennessee WilliamsThe Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans

TWTC kicks off its FOURTH SEASON with an ALL STAR CAST. Set at 722 Toulouse Street, VIEUX CARRÉ follows a young writer, not unlike Williams himself, who arrives one winter in the Crescent City for the first time and falls in love with the fabled French Quarter. It's a dangerous affair, though, and one that involves ambiguous love triangles, desperate longing, and heartbreak. Will the boy be able to navigate his way out of the fog teeming with quarter characters, starving society ladies, hustlers, and buskers? Or will he find himself crushed in the flood of carnal and spiritual desire?

Red Dress Run is an annual fun event which takes place on the second Saturday in August. Organized by the New Orleans running club Hash House Harriers, this race is a perfect solution for runners with a bit of a "drinking problem" because instead of your usual water, participants consume a tremendous ammount of alcohol on the course.
The major rule is that you must be 21 to participate, meaning that this party is for adults only. However, everyone, both men and women, are encouraged to dress up in their favourite red dress. The colourful attire that the runners put on, lots of alcohol and fun will ensure you have a party of a lifetime! However, it means so much more than just a red dress, so look through the webpage before you decide to participate.

The Red Dress Run starts at Crescent Park. The itinerary covers the neighborhood of the Marigny and French Quarter. Participants are encouraged to sign up at the official website of Hash House Harriers. The early birds who come in June benefit from lower cost. It's a charity run, so the registration includes donations to local charities, along with special live music and beers for the run.

###
About Louisiana Hospitality Foundation
Founded in 2006, the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation's mission is to strengthen Louisiana's hospitality industry through support of individuals within the community. We do this by supporting workforce development programs directly related to our industry; providing access to culinary and hospitality education; working to ensure a positive perception of Louisiana's hospitality industry; and providing financial assistance and/or guidance to people in the hospitality industry during times of crisis.
Since its inception, the Foundation has distributed over $1.6 million in support of its mission in the form of community grants, education grants, and hospitality worker crisis grants. These funds are raised through charitable donations and signature fundraising events including Horses, Hops and Cops, the Fidelity Bank Champions Club at Zurich Classic, the Gold Medal Chefs Gala, and other special events.

FAQs
What does the dinner include?
Each dinner is six-courses with wine pairings.
Dress Code?
Dress for a nicer evening out. We recommend jackets for men, but a tie is not necessary.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No. We will have a list with attendee names.
Is seafood the only item served?
This is a seafood dinner, so the dishes will all feature fish or shellfish.
When can I see the menu?
With seafood, we want the freshest available product, which sometimes isn't known until right before the dinner. We will do our best to get menu information out as early as possible, but trust us, whatever these chefs make is going to be delicious.
Can menu subsitutions be made?
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate menu substitutions.

The 6th Annual Louisiana Beef Picnic!

On Wednesday, August 22nd, Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse is once again transforming itself into an indoor picnic, complete with Louisiana grass-fed beef from Gonsoulin Cattle Ranch, as well as for the first time, Louisiana Wagyu from Raines Farm.

The Gonsoulin Family has been raising cattle outside New Iberia since 1770. Their grass-fed beef is raised sustainably and without antibiotics or growth hormones. Louisiana's Raines Farm has the largest herd of Wagyu cattle in the state. Raines Farm cattle are humanely raised, vegetarian fed, as well as hormone and antibiotic free.

Chefs from Dickie Brennan's SteakhousePalace CafeBourbon House and Tableau will expertly prepare various cuts of Louisiana beef to showcase their creativity. In true Dickie Brennan's Steakhouse fashion, they will use local ingredients, adding depth of flavor to each slice. Of course, a Louisiana picnic would not be complete without libations. This year Glenfiddich Whisky is joining in the festivities and will be offering specialty cocktails and tastings. Craft beer from Urban South Brewery and Port Orleans Brewing Companywill be served as well as wine from Wines of Substance and non-alcoholic drinks.
