Black Wall Street mural brings new look to Greenwood

TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — The Greenwood District is getting a new look with a Black Wall Street mural going up near the Greenwood Cultural Center.

“This is the Black Wall Street mural project, and it has been planned for about 10 months, and we are very excited it is happening right now,” said Project Manager Chris Rogers. He and Bill White worked together and commissioned Kansas City artist, Scribe Ross to make it happen.

“My favorite part of working on the mural has been meeting people from the community and them telling me little bits and pieces. I’m a novice when it comes to the history, but I’ve been able to read up on it,” said Ross, who uses each letter of Black Wall Street to illustrate a part of the history.

“One of the things I know from the mural, my thought was, we need something to punch, for lack of a better word, punch Tulsa in the mouth and say, ‘Wake up and look at the great history Tulsa has,’” said White.

Both men are hoping the mural will bring Tulsans and tourists to the area to take selfies, create hashtags and place to visit.

They will unveil the finished mural on Friday.
