Petco Park to host drive-in movie screenings of’Anchorman’ to benefit Feeding San Diego

Sweet Lincoln’s mullet! The San Diego Padres will host multiple screenings of “Anchorman,” the 2004 Will Ferrell comedy set in San Diego. Net proceeds will go to the nonprofit Feeding San Diego, a hunger-relief and food rescue organization, which is part of the national Feeding America food bank network.

The screenings at the newly dubbed Petco Park Drive-In will be held June 6 at 8:30 and 11:30 p.m. in the stadium’s Lexus parking lot. Gates will open an hour prior to each screening, with vehicles entering through the Tailgate lot on Imperial Ave., between 12th and 14th Streets. Cars will be escorted into the Lexus lot in groups of approximately 15.

The parking lot will have three distinct viewing areas, each with a separate screen. The audio will be available via an FM signal that can be tuned in on each vehicle’s radio. Attendance will be limited to 250 per screening. There is no limit on how many people can be in each vehicle, according to a Padres’ representative.

To ensure appropriate social distancing, there will be an empty parking place — a distance of approximately nine feet — between each car. Attendees will be asked to remain in their vehicles during the screenings and it is recommended that film-goers use the bathroom before arriving for the screenings. Private security and local law enforcement will be present to ensure the safety of all attendees.

Tickets will go on sale today at 10 a.m. at padres.com/drivein for Padres’ season ticket-holders. Any remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public at 2 p.m.

Tickets cost $45 per car for preferred parking and $35 for general parking. Each ticket includes a parking spot, two bottles of water, two candies (type as yet unknown) and one Padres cap. These items will be placed in the trunk or back seat of each vehicle, in order to avoid direct physical contact.

If attendance is strong, more Petco Park Drive-In film events may be in store, according to a Padres’ representative. It remains to be seen if more Major League Baseball parks will host drive-in movie screenings this summer. Because of the coronavirus, no games have been played yet this season.

In the meanwhile, the Padres will host a June 7 drive-in concert by Grammy Award-winning San Diego band Switchfoot. The five-man group will perform in the same Petco Park parking lot that will be used for the June 6 “Anchorman” screenings.

“Utilizing our ballpark and its surrounding areas as a way to help combat hunger in our community during these challenging times is something we are honored to do,” Pares’ President of Business Operations Erik Greupner said in a statement.

“By hosting these movie screenings and concert, we hope to give San Diegans a unique entertainment experience in the safe and comfortable confines of their own vehicle while raising funds for a great organization, Feeding San Diego.”
